The Escola Secundária de Silves celebrated 2019 years of existence in 100, but the initiatives linked to the event continue: this Saturday, March 26, there will be the inauguration of Rua João José Gomes, former teacher and director, and the launch of a commemorative book.

The unveiling of the toponymic plaque in honor of the sculptor-professor João José Gomes will take place at 15:30 pm, on the north side of the Silves municipal market.

«The toponymic attribution in honor of João José Gomes is due to his great career at the Escola Industrial e Comercial João de Deus, currently Escola Secundária de Silves (ESS), between 1933 and 1966, where he was professor and director (in the latter case, for 13 years)", says the City Council.

«Very esteemed and considered by colleagues, staff and students, Professor João José Gomes distinguished himself, for the introduction of pedagogical methods that only later came to be adopted in the official programs of Education in Portugal and for the relationship of proximity and simplicity towards students, practice, at the time, unusual», he adds.

As a director, recalls the municipality, «he was evident in the work of modernizing the School, especially with the creation of evening courses, an initiative of enormous significance due to the possibility of reconciling work and study schedules, thus allowing for the valorization of in the profession and business of many student workers and merchants in the county».

Later, starting at 16:30 pm, there will be a presentation of the book “Escola Secundária de Silves, 100 Years of Existence. Contribution to your History (1919-2019)”, by Rogélio Mena Gomes and Manuel José de Sousa Santos (Mourinho).

The presentation will take place at the Parish Council of Silves.
