Loulé renewed and approved «preventive measures that have made it possible to stop the progress of some investments that could jeopardize the sustainable development of the municipality», namely those planned for the mouth of Almargem and Trafal, for Matos da Picota and for the place where holds the weekly market in Quarteira
«As part of the review of the Municipal Master Plan (PDM), these preventive measures were determined with the general objective of not compromising the execution of the planning options to be taken within the scope of the ongoing PDM review process, avoiding damages resulting from the possible changing the characteristics of the respective areas covered, whether from an environmental, social, economic or urban point of view», states Vítor Aleixo, mayor of Loulé.
In practice, this means that, in the place where the weekly fruit market takes place in Quarteira, south of Av. Francisco Sá Carneiro, in an area of about 1,3 hectares, «the preventive measures approved 2 years ago were extended».
«Since it is a central, strategic area, subject to strong real estate pressure, this measure aims to preserve this area, preventing any type of residential construction there. It is, moreover, the intention of the municipality of Loulé to create in this place a public and green space for leisure and conviviality of the population», assured the Loulé City Council.
In the Quarteira Nascente area, «coinciding in part with the place where the process of creating the Foz do Almargem and Trafal Local Nature Reserve takes place, in an area of 189 hectares, preventive measures were renewed and the subsequent suspension of the effectiveness of the PDM in force'.
«Finally, in Matos da Picota, in an area of about 8,5 hectares, in the parishes of Boliqueime and S. Sebastião, where the former quarry operated, the developer's intention to install a waste management unit triggered a process that culminated in now with the establishment of these measures and the subsequent suspension of the effectiveness of the PDM in force», added .
