WHO director calls for more collaboration on virus origin

“Solidarity is fundamental to guarantee access and accessibility to vaccines”

The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO) spoke to the Chinese premier of the "need" for "stronger collaboration" to determine the origins of covid-19, based "on science and evidence".

In a message posted on his official Twitter profile on Saturday night, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus thanked Li Keqiang for China's support to "invigorate the WHO"

The two officials also discussed the strengthening of global vaccination campaigns to ensure that 70% of the world's population received the vaccine against the coronavirus.

“Solidarity is key to guaranteeing access and accessibility to vaccines,” he added.

Following Saturday's meeting, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement in which it stated that Tedros said that "the WHO adheres to scientific principles to investigate the origin of the virus and opposes the politicization" of that process.

Tedros held another meeting today, this time with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who said that the sale of more than 2,1 billion doses of vaccines to more than 120 countries and international organizations is “the largest emergency humanitarian operation in the world.” ” that China has launched since the founding of the People’s Republic in 1949.
