Expanded Portimão Cemetery, new space advances this year

In December alone, there were 46 funerals in Portimão. Old cemetery is almost sold out, new one may advance

The Portimão Cemetery was expanded by 1200 square meters, allowing the installation of another 90 catacombs (drawers) and 1500 ossuaries, announced this Monday, the 10th, councilor João Gamboa, during a visit to the works.

As for the contract for the new city cemetery, to be built in Malheiro, just outside Portimão on Via do Infante, “it should be launched in the first quarter” of 2022.

For now, in the current cemetery, 50 catacombs and 560 ossuaries are built, and the construction of the rest will be carried out in the space that is already prepared, according to needs.

An area was also created for the installation of seven new deposits, four of which have already been sold at public auction, for 12 thousand euros each.

The purchase of 1200 square meters of land, which allowed the expansion of the area of ​​that equipment, as well as the preparation and construction of the new structures, represents an investment of 650 thousand euros by the Portimão City Council.

Councilman João Gamboa guaranteed that this enlargement “was a necessity”. "Last December, we had 46 funerals, a number that also results from the increase in population," he added.

However, as soon as all the new equipment is sold, the municipal investment will be paid in full.

As for the new cemetery, which will be built on a plot of four hectares located in Malheiro, the total planned investment is 3,6 million euros, of which 600 in infrastructure and the remaining 3 million in the cemetery itself.

João Gamboa stressed that this new space «will have all the features of a cemetery: drawers, aerobic graves and crematorium».

The crematorium, however, will be awarded by public auction. The company that wins the tender for its design and construction will then be responsible for its operation and operation.

All projects are ready, all that is missing is the publication of the detailed plan so that the three tender procedures can be launched simultaneously. for the construction of infrastructure, the cemetery and the crematorium.

Councilman João Gamboa estimates that everything can be ready and working «24 to 36 months» after the award.
