The first edition of the transatlantic regatta «McIntyre Adventure Globe 5.80 Transat» will depart this Monday, November 1st, from Lagos, bound for Lanzarote and Antigua.

The departure is scheduled for 1200 hours UTC (13:00 local time). The end of the race will take place in Antigua, Caribbean, before Christmas.

This is an entirely new category of boats, measuring just 5,80 meters, built entirely by the sailors themselves.

The idea was launched only last year during the confinement caused by the pandemic and, according to the organization, there are already 150 builders who are building “their unique and first boat in the world in 22 countries around the world on several continents, including in Portugal".

The first five boats built and ready for the sea are already in Marina de Lagos. The 6th arrived this Sunday. All will leave for the first Transatlantic race this Monday, in Lagos.

Lutz Kohne, race director for the G580T, has delayed the start of the McIntyre Adventure Globe 5,80 Transat 24 hours until Monday, November 1st. at 1200 hours UTC.

Although the weather was acceptable for Sunday 31, the participants agreed that it would be better to await the arrival of Irish participant Jim Schofield, who was towing his yacht «Molly Claire» from Ireland by car and was not expected to have arrived at Marina de Lagos until the evening. of Sunday.

However, the Irish sailor, according to the organization, “will not launch, assemble and prepare to sail in the following days. Jim has made a great effort to be with the fleet and enter the race and now he is not expected to start until Thursday, officially reaching the fleet at Marina Rubicon in Lanzarote».

However, “all participants want to have a drink with him before leaving! That's how the Globe 5.80 family works».

“Our fleet is the same size as the VOLVO Race fleet which is great and the participants are a big family and that's it for them,” said Don McIntyre, founder of Team 5.80 and captain of TREKKA.
