Tennis: Luís Faria moves forward at Loulé Open

Tournament lasts until October 17th

This Tuesday, Luís Faria won the first Portuguese victory in the Loulé Open singles main frame. Before, Miguel Gomes and Gonçalo Falcão successfully passed through the qualifying phase and to close the day Pedro Araújo advanced in the doubles variant alongside Kaichi Uchida.

Invited by the organization to the main board, Luís Faria (who this week occupies the 777th place in the ATP ranking) got the better of Tiago Cação — his training partner at the High Performance Center of the Portuguese Tennis Federation — by winning 6 -3, 4-6 and 6-0.

The victory, added early this Tuesday afternoon, allowed the 22-year-old from Guimarães to rediscover his singles victories about a month after having achieved the best result of his career — the semi-finals in the 25.000 ITF Sintra dollars (since he has played two semi-finals of pairs on the ATP Challenger Tour, both alongside Jaime Faria).

In the second round, Luís Faria will measure forces with the winner of the meeting between the Japanese Kaichi Uchida (369th ATP and winner of an ITF in Vale do Lobo at the beginning of the season) and the Portuguese Gonçalo Falcão, who in the morning “ he broke” the qualifying phase by beating the Luxembourgish Raphael Calzi (1836th and ninth pre-designated) 6-4 and 6-2.

The triumph allowed the 33-year-old Portuguese tennis player to enter his name in the singles main frame of an international tournament for the third time in 2021, after having done so in Vale do Lobo and Sintra.

Miguel Gomes also won in the morning, who, by imposing the partials of 6-3 and 6-0 on German Tim Heger (1523.º ATP and sixth seed in the qualifying), registered his third victory of the week at Clube de Tênis de Loulé and secured for the third consecutive time the presence on the main board of an ITF tournament.

Defeated in the first round in Sintra (after passing the qualifying) and in Setúbal (received a wild card), the 18-year-old Portuguese youngster — who this year was number 27 in the world for juniors — will look for the first victory of his career in top management against Laurent Lokoli (522nd).

Less happy was the day of Henrique Rocha, who was physically limited and could not fight against the Spaniard Alberto Barroso Campos, losing 6-3 and 6-3 to the 772nd ranked ATP in the last round of qualifying.

Closing the day, Pedro Araújo scored the first Portuguese victory in the doubles variant when he debuted with the right foot alongside the Japanese Kaichi Uchida, with whom he beat Miguel Gomes and Henrique Rocha by 6-2, 3-6 and 10- 5.

Martim Simões and Illia Stoliar lost 6-1 and 6-1 to Raphael Calzi and Amaury Raynel, while Afonso Portugal and Bernardo Teixeira conceded 7-6(2) and 6-1 to Rickey Hijikata and Mick Veldheer.
