The book “A journey through time through the History of Monchique” was presented this Wednesday, October 6th, and is the result of a collaboration between the City Council and the Manuel do Nascimento Basic School.
The session was attended by Rui André, Mayor of Monchique, Fábio Capela, municipal archaeologist, students from the 7th school year who wrote this book and also some of the teachers involved (Paulo Girão and Fernanda Gomes).
The creation of the book “A journey through time through the History of Monchique” is the result of an innovative collaboration between the Municipality of Monchique and the Manuel do Nascimento Basic School and started from a challenge, launched by the municipal archaeologist, to teachers and students.
“The challenge was gladly accepted by the teachers of the 2nd cycle and integrated in a joint project of the subjects of History and Geography of Portugal, Visual Education and Portuguese, in articulation with the School Library”, says Monchique Town Hall.
The idea was “to involve the school community in the elaboration of brief explanatory texts and illustrations about the history” of Monchique, “from recent prehistory to the Roman period”.
The project integrated several activities, including a study visit to the Alferce Castle Hill and to Caldas de Monchique, guided by the archaeologist of the Municipality of Monchique.
Also in the 2019/2020 school year, sessions were held with the illustrator Carlos J. Campos and the cartoon artist Fernando Madeira, from the Algarve's Comic Book and Animation Center, in partnership with the Escolar Library and the Municipal Library from Monchique.
«The work developed not only served to expand knowledge about the Historical and Archaeological Heritage of Monchique, but also allowed the approach of programmatic contents in an appealing and creative way and came to motivate students to produce both the text and the illustrations» , says the Chamber of Monchique.
Through this edition, promoted by the Municipality of Monchique, the result of the work developed throughout the academic year of 2020-2021, by students and teachers of the Manuel do Nascimento Basic School, will be accessible to all interested parties.
This first edition of “A journey through time through the History of Monchique” includes two chapters and addresses the ancient human occupations in the emblematic Archaeological Site of Cerro do Castelo de Alferce and the Roman presence in the famous Caldas de Monchique.
