The University of the Algarve (UAlg) is one of the 20 institutions worldwide that produces the most scientific articles in Marine and Coastal Tourism, according to the Journal of Coastal Research, occupying the 14th place. Portugal occupies 11th place in a ranking led by the United States.

«The work carried out by its Research and Development Units (UI&D) contributed greatly to the excellent results achieved by UAlg», such as the Research Center for Tourism, Sustainability and Welfare (CinTurs), the Center for Marine and Environmental Research (CIMA), the Marine Science Center (CCMAR) and the CiTUR hub (Center for Research, Development and Innovation in Tourism).

The results are presented through a bibliometric analysis and provide “a systematic evaluation of scientific articles on Marine and Coastal Tourism around the world, through a multidisciplinary analysis in the WoS (Web of Science) database”, says UAlg.

In total, 162 countries contributed to this study, being led by the United States with 1.011 articles, representing 16,33% of all publications.

Portugal occupies 11th place in the ranking with 315 articles, which is equivalent to 3,47% of publications.

According to Alexandra Teodósio, vice-rector for Research and Internationalization, these results “are explained by the synergy that exists between UAlg's UI&D, in the areas of tourism, environment and marine sciences, which allows for transdisciplinary research and will allow for further development post-graduate courses in marine and coastal tourism at the academy», says the University of Algarve.

«The recent establishment of the only Collaborative Laboratory in the area of Innovation in Tourism with headquarters in the Algarve, the KIPT will further enhance the appreciation of knowledge and the creation of innovative jobs in the area», concludes UAlg.
