From Windward to Sotavento, municipalities celebrate International Coastal Cleaning Day

Albufeira, Aljezur, Lagos, Loulé, Portimão, Silves, Tavira, Vila do Bispo and Vila Real de Santo António are the municipalities that will have initiatives to celebrate this anniversary

The International Coastal Cleaning Day will be able to be celebrated, this year, between the 18th and the 26th of September, with land and underwater cleaning actions in 17 initiatives in the Algarve, including a cleaning action in Armação de Pêra with the participation of bodyboarder Joana Schenker and students from the municipality of Silves.

For the third consecutive year, Portuguese organizations have come together to mark the International Coastal Cleansing Day, responding to the challenge of the Oceano Azul Foundation.

With more than 150 actions being planned nationwide, 17 of them will take place in the Algarve. Albufeira, Aljezur, Lagos, Loulé, Portimão, Silves, Tavira, Vila do Bispo and Vila Real de Santo António are the municipalities that will have initiatives to celebrate this event.

In Silves, on the Pescadores beach of Armação de Pêra, the coastal cleaning action, planned by the municipality, will count on the participation of the bodyboarder Joana Schenker (“Ocean Leader” of the Oceano Azul Foundation) and students from schools participating in the “Educar para uma Geração Azul” program.

All coastal and underwater cleanups, which will take place at national level, can be consulted here.

This year, all initiatives within the scope of the commemorations of this international day are part of the #EUBeachCleanup campaign, which brings together cleaning actions around the world.

One of the priorities of the Oceano Azul Foundation continues to be «giving visibility to the work of organizations that, throughout the year, actively contribute to the fight against marine litter, a serious environmental problem on the planet», the foundation says in a press release .

"This initiative is intended to continue to mobilize civil society for greater environmental awareness, alerting to the urgent need for greater protection of the ocean."

All organizations that so wish can also join the initiative, having to register their cleaning actions in the website of the Oceano Azul Foundation.

Since the beginning of this initiative, in 2019, 134 tons of marine litter have been collected in more than 800 coastal cleaning actions, which involved more than 14 volunteers and 200 organizations.
