Portugal with high Covid-19 transmissibility level but stable trend

Delta variant continues to represent almost all infections (99,5%)

The cumulative incidence of Covid-19 cases in the last 14 days in Portugal was 312 cases per 100 inhabitants, which represents a high level of transmissibility, but with a stable trend, according to the red lines report.

In the week of August 13th to 19th, the 14-day incidence was fixed at 312 cases, with the Algarve region remaining above the threshold of 480 cases per 100 inhabitants, with a cumulative incidence of 748 cases, a variation 4% compared to the previous week, according to the monitoring report of the red lines of the National Institute of Health Doctor Ricardo Jorge (INSA) and the General Directorate of Health (DGS).

According to the report, Portugal registered an epidemic activity “of high intensity, with a stable trend at national level”, with a “decreasing trend” pressure on health care and a mortality rate per Covid-19 to remain unchanged "probably high, but with a constant trend".

The Delta variant continues to represent almost all infections (99,5%).

“On August 18, 2021, specific mortality by Covid-19 registered a value of 18,1 deaths in 14 days per million inhabitants, which corresponds to a decrease of 3% compared to the previous week (18,6 per 1.000.000. 10). This figure is above the threshold of 14 deaths in XNUMX days per million population defined by the European Center for Disease Control (ECDC)”, the report says.

Still on mortality, the document points out that "this indicator presents a stable trend and it is likely that it will remain so or begin to decrease if the incidence in the population remains stable and decreasing".

In terms of transmissibility indicators, the R(t) remains below 1 at national level, with a value of 0,98.

«An R(t) value greater than 1 was observed in the Center (1,01), Alentejo (1,03) and Algarve (1,04) regions, indicating a constant upward trend in the incidence of SARS-CoV infection -2/ Covid-19. If these growth rates are maintained, the incidence rate threshold at 14 days of 960 cases per 100 inhabitants could be reached in two weeks to one month in the Algarve region and the threshold of 480 cases per 100.000 in one to two months in the region Alentejo”, alerts the report.

According to the document, the average value of R(t) rose in all regions of the country in the last week, which suggests “a deceleration of the downward trend in incidence, and the possible beginning of a phase of growth in incidence in the Alentejo and Algarve».

As for the cumulative incidence by age groups, the group between 20 and 29 years old registered the highest values, with 776 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants, showing “a possible growing trend”.

"The age group of individuals aged 80 years and over had a cumulative incidence of 14 cases per 135 inhabitants at 100 days, which reflects a risk of infection lower than the risk for the general population, with a decreasing trend", reads document, which also shows that the immediately previous age groups, from 70 to 79 years old, and from 60 to 69 years old, also have the level of incidence at 14 days in decline.

Still on the evolution of the epidemic among the elderly, the report states that “the age group aged 65 and over has a cumulative incidence rate of 14 cases per 115 thousand inhabitants at 100 days, which is lower than the defined threshold of 240 cases per 100 thousand” and that “the variation of this indicator shows a stable decreasing trend”.

In the last week, 141 patients were admitted to intensive care units (ICU), which corresponds to 55% of the critical threshold for health services, of 255 beds occupied, also representing a reduction compared to the previous week.

«In recent weeks, this indicator has been assuming a decreasing trend (-17% compared to the previous week)», refers the document, which details that the age group most represented in ICU admissions was the 60-79 year-old group.

The data also indicate that in the last week the proportion of positive cases detected compared to the number of tests carried out was 4%, with an increase in the number of tests carried out having been registered.

In the last week, 88% of Covid-19 cases were isolated within 24 hours of notification and all contacts were tracked and isolated in 72% of cases.
