Street defibrillator saves young tourist's life in Albufeira

Albufeira has 23 DAE installed on the street

A 21-year-old boy, who was on holiday in Albufeira, was revived last Saturday, August 14th, thanks to a defibrillator installed on the public road and to maneuvers carried out by those who were there. This was the first time that civilians used one of these automated external defibrillators (AEDs) successfully.

The Municipality of Albufeira believes that this «was an important step towards developing people's confidence in the use of AEDs and, above all, for having guaranteed the life of this young man from Odivelas».

According to the municipality, “the young man, born in Famões (Odivelas), was in a private pool in Santa Eulália, when he suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest. Civilians present initiated resuscitation maneuvers, collected and used the AED of the respective area, and activated the 112».

The Municipality of Albufeira recalls that there are 23 DAE on the streets and nine other furniture (in vehicles from the Fire Department, Civil Protection, Municipal Police and GNR), having been the first municipality in the region to have DAE on the street (since the beginning of 2018).

The equipment is in booths specially prepared for this purpose and signposted, next to anchor buildings, namely, some municipal structures, and in places with a large influx of people.

The DAE are located at Rua do Município (opposite the Town Hall), Albufeira Sports Pavilion / Municipal Stadium, Municipal Swimming Pools/Imortal FC training camps / Quinta da Palmeira, Av. Sá Carneiro (Oura), Avenida da Liberdade (Pharmacy Alves Sousa), Av. 25 de Abril (GNR Post in the city's downtown), Pau da Bandeira Viewpoint, Parish of Ferreiras (roundabout), Parish of Guia (next to the chapel), Parish of Olhos de Água (old Parish Council) and Parish of Paderne (Praça Nova).
