Week of the Municipality of Loulé has exhibitions, tributes and a concert by Tiago Bettencourt

Municipality Day coincides with the anniversary of the elevation of Quarteira to a city

The celebrations for the Week of the Municipality of Loulé began this Friday, May 7th, and will last for 10 days. Exhibitions, tributes, the traditional Festa da Espiga (online) and a concert with Tiago Bettencourt are some of the planned initiatives.

“From the coast to the interior, from culture to environmental action, from municipal works to civil protection, there are many reasons and moments for this Week of the Municipality”, underlines Vítor Aleixo, mayor of Loulé.

«Loulé and its people deserve to celebrate their achievements in the best possible way, after a year with many restrictions and the demand for many sacrifices. Therefore, we appeal to the involvement of the entire community, but, naturally, with the precautions that the pandemic still requires», considers the mayor.

The celebrations started this Friday, the 7th, with the inauguration of the first phase of the Loulé Litoral Walkways, between Quinta do Lago (Ludo) and Praia do Garrão, with the presence of the Minister of Environment and Climate Action João Matos Fernandes, at the unveiling of the inaugural plaque of this space, part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park.

Next Wednesday, May 12th, the municipality will mark the Civil Protection Day of Loulé, at 10:30 am, where 49 members of the National Fire Department will be decorated.

Next will be presented the vehicles delivered to the GNR and Parish Councils (Salir and União de Parishes of Querença, Tôr and Benafim), which will start operating in the summer, in the context of the defense of the forest against fire.

In Quarteira, also on the 12th, at 18 pm, the awards ceremony for “School Recognition” and “Citizen of Merit of the Parish of Quarteira” will take place in the auditorium of the Municipal Center.

On the 13th of May, “Quinta da Espiga”, marks the Municipality Day, which this year coincides with the 22nd Anniversary of the Elevation of Quarteira to the City. On this day, in Quarteira, Avenida da Alameda da Praia da Marina (at 11:00 am) and the 2nd phase of Passeio das Dunas (at 12:00 am) will be inaugurated.

The Espiga Festival will take place, for the second consecutive year, in online format, without the traditional ethnographic parade that usually attracts thousands of visitors to the village.

The event will have activities broadcast live through the social networks, which will «bring memories about the traditions of this day that has become, over the years, a true tourist attraction of the Algarve's mountains», says Câmara de Loulé.

Also on the 13th, in Quarteira, at 17:30 pm, in front of the old auction building, the exhibition “With Feet on Earth and Hands on the Sea – 6000 Years of History of Quarteira” will be inaugurated, in partnership with the General Management of Cultural Heritage / National Archeology Museum and the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve.

This exhibition "will certainly constitute a milestone in the cultural and identity life of the Quarteirense community," says the municipality.

At night, the citizens who stood out in the municipality in different areas will be honored. The solemn awarding ceremony of the Medals of Honor and Merit of the Municipality of Loulé will take place at the Cineteatro Louletano, at 20:30, and will distinguish, among others, the 210 professionals of the National Health Service in the municipality of Loulé, who were in the front line in the fight to Covid-19.

Still in the tributes, but on the 15th, at 10:30 am, in the Hall of the Municipal Assembly of Loulé, Lídia Jorge will receive the Grand Prize for Chronicles and Literary Dispersed, an award established by the Portuguese Writers Association and the Loulé City Council since 2016.

During these 10 days, there will also be several cultural initiatives that are also part of the schedule of the Week of the Municipality.

This Saturday, the 8th, the Monstrare Social Film Festival will return with the presentation of the film “Submissão”, by Leonardo António, at 17 pm, at the Cineteatro Louletano, which will also receive, on the 00th, the show “Faces do Accordeão ”, also at 9 pm.

On the 15th, there will be theater with the play “A Noite de Molly Bloom”, by ACTA – A Companhia de Teatro do Algarve, at 21 pm, in the same space.

For the end of the celebrations, the concert by Tiago Bettencourt is reserved, which takes to the stage of the Cineteatro Louletano, at 17 pm, on the 00th of May.

Between the 10th and 14th of May, the Conservatório de Música de Loulé also participates in the celebrations, broadcasting, in streaming, at 20:00, through the social networks, concerts where Professor Francisco Rosado will perform with his students from different instrument classes.
