Algarve has Central Artes back in May

Initiative starts in Albufeira

El Niño del Retrete

Central Artes, a networked cultural programming project that started in the Algarve in 2020, bringing together the municipalities of Loulé, Albufeira, Faro, Tavira and Olhão, is back in 2021. After a forced stop in programming, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the performing arts program is back and starts on the 16th of May, in Albufeira.

The show “El Niño del Retrete – Cartoon Toylette”, by the company Teatro nelle Foglie, marks the beginning of Central Artes, in the municipality of Albufeire, and brings with it the workshops “Backstage” and “Manipulation of dance objects” (on 15 and 16 , respectively).

The program includes, in all, 11 shows with international and national companies in Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira and Albufeira, favoring «creative training and interaction with the public through workshops and a community-based program that directly involves local communities», explain the promoters.

The “Internal Agents” project by Ana Borralho & João Galante, a casaBranca production, is one of the proposals of Central Artes. This initiative is aimed at audiences between 15 and 80 years of age, with sessions that include the realization of a play with 10 people on stage, in a quiz game on sustainability in the broad sense.

Internal Agents

“Agentes Internos” will be at the Albufeira Municipal Auditorium between the 24th and 28th of May, with a formation and show on the 29th; in Olhão, training from May 31st to June 4th and show on 5th, at Teatro Municipal de Olhão and in Faro, in Estoi, there will be training from the 21st to the 25th of June and a show on the 26th, at Cinema Ossónoba.

Admission to the shows is free (according to room capacity) and tickets can be obtained on the day and location of the show. The workshops/training, however, require prior registration, which can be done through the email [email protected].

«This formative or pedagogical perspective is part of the project's DNA, with the aim of supporting and motivating the production of Culture in the Algarve region. This is a networked cultural program that is linked to the territory, its identity and its communities, so this project involves people, making them "go on stage" and feel "the sweat and tears" of life artistic experience and how these experiences can “make a difference in their lives”».

Floated

In terms of shows, in Loulé, the highlight was “Flotados” by David Moreno and Cristina Calleja, «an incredible performance, which includes a hanging piano and suspended dancers», on the 28th of May, including two workshops the day before: “Visual Music and Movement”, from 18:00 pm to 19:30 pm and, soon after, at 20:30 pm, another workshop, “In the Backstage”, which, “as the name implies, provides a behind-the-scenes visit of an international show from the Central Artes programme, interaction with the artists and a very brief historical context about this type of event», the promoters say.

In turn, in Olhão, on the 10th of July there will be the show “DistanS”, by the company Vol'e Temps, and the workshop “Introduction to the various circus disciplines”. On the 9th of July, there is the workshop “Backstage”.

Bringing together the five municipalities of the Algarve Central, Central Artes will also bring in May the workshops “Pinto-me dancing” (on the 25th in Loulé and on the 26th in Albufeira) and later, in June, the workshops “Through the books”, in Tavira on the 14th of June, Olhão on the 15th of June (at the Municipal Library of Olhão José Mariano Gago), in Albufeira on the 16th of June (Lídia Jorge Municipal Library), in Loulé on the 17th (Auditório do Convento do Espírito Santo) and in Faro to 18 (Municipal Library António Ramos Rosa).

The two-year project will make available more than 50 events, «some of them with dates to be announced in due course, depending on the evolution of the pandemic context».

The Central Artes «is the result of an application to the CRESC Algarve 2020 Operational Programme, a program that aims to promote balanced development, affirming the Algarve as a more competitive, resilient, entrepreneurial and sustainable region, strengthened based on the enhancement of knowledge».

Central Artes found a framework in measure 6.3 – Conservation, Protection, Promotion and Development of Cultural and Natural Heritage – Tourism Promotion and Realization of Cultural Events.
