Exhibition celebrates 20 years of the Children and Youth Ranch of Santa Bárbara de Nexe

Since February, the ranch has been idle due to Covid-19

An exhibition, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Santa Bárbara de Nexe Folklore Group for Children and Youth, will be on display from November 7th to December 12th, at the Regional Museum of Algarve, in Faro.

This show portrays 20 years of activity by a group that emerged from a school project, with the aim of reactivating folklore.

This project was adopted by the then sixty-year-old association Nexense «and by the parents of the children, who have played a fundamental role in keeping this section active for 20 uninterrupted years», says the organization.

This group has participated in around 200 national festivals and has performed in Spain and Brussels (European Parliament).

The Folklore Group for Children and Youth of Santa Bárbara de Nexe presents dances, vivas, rhythms and colors «from our genuine Algarve, with dances by Roda and Corridinhos, accompanied by accordion and ironwork».

There is also no lack of music by accordionists from Bordeira: masters Zé Ferreiro Pai, with “Alma Algarvia”, and “Os Ferreiros”, João Bexiga (“My grandmother had a donkey”) and Nelson Conceição.

The Children's Ranch, not being an Ethnographic group, wears ball costume from the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries, in which the girl dresses like a poor girl who went to the ball, with colorful and striped skirts and flowery blouses, with a hat, scarf and apron . The boy represents the rich boy: dressed in black, which was the hallmark of the wealthy, with a hat and scarf around his neck.

The trophies given throughout the 20 festivals are also representative of our local and regional ethnography. The flowers of Amendoeira, the Igreja Matriz de Santa Bárbara, the mill, the carrycot, the tile, the basket, the chimney, the patchwork bag, the small irons or the cart.

Since February, the ranch has been idle due to Covid-19.
