The EcoParque Algarve, the new organics treatment unit, located in São Bartolomeu de Messines, allows the treatment of 75 thousand tons of sludge resulting from the treatment of effluents in the Algarve's WWTP, and will now serve the Algarve market.

With «a unique technology in Portugal that allows keeping the sludge in aerobiosis (reducing the bad smell)», BioSmart, a company of the NOV Ambiente & Energia Group, invested more than 2 million euros in this project, which it classifies as «sustainable », since it also bets on the «production of photovoltaic energy for self-consumption, being an example of circular economy».

In other words, the company points out, "everything that enters as waste comes out as a valued product".

The organic treatment unit in São Bartolomeu de Messines, in the municipality of Silves, was presented on 26 August by BioSmart.

In an event that brought together, with the proper security conditions, several dozen people, the presence of the Mayor of Silves and the Parish Council of São Bartolomeu de Messines and various elements of the Municipal Assembly of Silves stand out, as well. as the Board of Directors of Águas do Algarve, in addition to the Boards of Directors of Grupo NOV and Grupo NOV Ambiente & Energia.

The Messines unit has a capacity to treat 25 thousand tons per year, in addition to the installed storage capacity of 50 thousand tons/year.

The sludge to be treated in this new unit is that resulting from the process of the Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTP), which are operated by the company Águas do Algarve.

According to the company BioSmart, these investments also have “social, economic and environmental importance”.

This unit will serve the Algarve market, which produces around 50 thousand tons of sludge per year, maintaining the contractual compliance conditions resulting from BioSmart having won the public tender for www.gruponov.com, for Águas' sludge treatment of the Algarve, in February of this year.

Until now, the sludge was sent and treated in other licensed BioSmart units.

Currently, BioSmart and its subsidiaries have three more sludge treatment units in Figueira da Foz (Bioenergias), Beja and Ansião, in a total investment that already exceeds 5 million euros.

The NOV Ambiente e Energia Group, headquartered in Leiria, is a business universe operating in the field of Environment and Energy, which includes several companies, including BioSmart, Bioenergias, Treciver and Eneólica.
