7th International Guitar Festival of Lagoa opens in Ferragudo with Ensemble Med

Three of the eight shows are free to enter

A concert by Francisco Morais Franco and Ensemble Med, at the Igreja de Ferragudo, opens, on the 12th of September, the 7th International Guitar Festival of Lagoa, which runs until October 1st.

O Ensemble Med, [med: mediterranean/medieval] was born in April 2012 within the Ancient Music Department of the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht, and proposes an intimate program that pays tribute to the medieval musical heritage of Mediterranean roots, seeking to highlight the cultural richness of this region in a historically informed way, both in written music and in oral tradition.

It consists of Daniela Tomaz, in artistic direction, historical flutes, Mariana Fabião, in voice, Sérgio Calisto, in nyckelharpa and moraharpa, and Rui Silva, in historical percussion and adufe. Without a doubt, a good way to start the 7th edition of this festival, which goes far beyond the guitar that gives it its name.

«The festival, framed in the theme that the Municipality values ​​as strategic for the coming years “Lagoa, Cidade Sustentável”», has this year the singularity of celebrating the 500 Years of the place of Ferragudo, which is why the opening concert takes place in this village.

"We sought, in 2020, that the programming of 13 concerts would take place, as in previous years, in different places in the municipality, thus enhancing the artistic and cultural heritage of Lagoa, as well as offering different thematic proposals", stresses the Chamber Municipality of Lagos.

The program continues, on the 13th, at the Igreja de Estômbar, with the performance of Ricardo Leitão Pedro and the Castra Leuca Trio, a “world music” formation dedicated above all to traditional Ibero-American folklore.

On the following weekend, on the 19th of September, it will be the turn of the open-air auditorium of the Parque Municipal das Fontes de Estômbar to host a concert by the 5EX Band and the Galandum Galundaina, the Mirandese traditional music group which has already conquered Europe with its sonorities, guaranteed by the instruments used, replicas of very old ones.

On the 20th, the Igreja de Porches receives the Group of Soloists of the Portuguese Guitar and Mandolin Orchestra.

On September 25, at the Centro Cultural do Convento de S. José, the Aïghetta Quartet will perform, formed in 1979 in Monte Carlo and having made their first public performance in 1980.

However, their career as an international group only happened in 1982 with the presentation of Andalusian concert by Joaquin Rodrigo at the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra. Spain, Belgium, England, Italy, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Slovenia, Macedonia, Hungary, Austria and the Federal Republic of Germany followed, as well as numerous television and radio broadcasts.

Aïghetta Quartett have recorded several CDs, including a tribute to Bill Evans with jazz guitarist John McLaughlin (Time Remembered), works for the guitar quartet by Anthony Burgess and an album dedicated to his own compositions: “Acoustic World” .

The Aïghetta Quartet, which now arrives in Lagoa, has already visited the most prestigious concert halls such as La Fenice in Venice, the Palau de la Musica Catalana in Barcelona, ​​Salle Garnier in Monte Carlo, Gasteig in Munich, Brücknerhaus in Linz, Wigmore Hall in London, Mirabell Castle in Salzburg, Ghione Theater in Rome, Ghione Theater in Rome, Ohrid Summer Festival (Macedonia).

On the 26th, in the open air amphitheater of Carvoeiro, next to the chapel and the fortress of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação, the Valencia Guitar Duo and the Ó Chibinha project will be presented, dedicated to folk music, music that supports dances traditional from various corners of Europe.

On the 27th, it will be time to return to Sítio das Fontes, for a concert by Miguel Amaral & Yuri Reis, followed by the quartet of the famous flamenco interpreter Jesús Guerrero.

Closing the schedule of this 7th International Guitar Festival of Lagoa, on October 1st, World Music Day, will be interpreted the Andalusian concert by Joaquin Rodrigo, by the Concordis Guitar Quartet and the Bontempo Orchestra, at the Carlos do Carmo Auditorium, in Lagoa.

All shows take place at 17:30 pm, except for the 1st of October, which is scheduled for 19 pm.

Eudoro Grade, artistic director of the festival, stresses that «the intention of the Artistic Direction of the 7th International Guitar Festival of Lagoa is to provide quality cultural value at the moment offered at each concert, gathering, in the privacy of each one, moments of Hope that are fundamental to sustainability of our life».

The concerts in the churches of Ferragudo, Estômbar and Porches are free, although they are subject to a ticket collection, for security reasons. For the rest, tickets are already available and can be purchased online by clicking here.

The organization, in charge of the Municipality of Lagoa, guarantees that «thehe shows are held in compliance with all safety and hygiene standards, in open-air venues, even if delimited, in accordance with DGS standards and contingency plans created for that purpose».

It is still mandatory the use of masks and compliance with the safety rules defined for the various shows.
