Portugal may start pilot serological tests later this month

Number of immunized should be "relatively small"

Portugal may start, this April, the first tests of the population's immunity to the new coronavirus, said today the president of the Ricardo Jorge Institute, stressing that it is not yet time to start carrying out these tests in mass.

"We anticipate that by the end of April or the first week of May this first pilot survey will be launched in a population of around 1.700 people," who will be subjected to a serological analysis to find out if they have developed antibodies to Covid-19 , said Fernando Almeida at the daily press conference to monitor the pandemic.

The head of the National Health Institute Dr. Ricardo Jorge (INSA) pointed out that “it is debatable that mass tests can now be carried out to detect antibodies” and that the countries that have already started them are in different phases of the pandemic compared to Portugal.

“We know from the numbers we have and the epidemic curve that we are, fortunately, controlling, that the number of immunized people, of people who have developed these antibodies, is relatively small,” he said.
