Casa da Cidadania will tell the story of Lagoa «in a differentiating way»

Project to create a museum space in Lagoa has already started and wants to be completed by the beginning of 2021

Lagoa will have a House of Citizenship, from January 2021, to tell the history of the county and its illustrious figures. The project, which wants to be «differentiating to a regional scale», will be installed in the former Paços do Concelho building.

The International Meetings of Politics and Image, which began yesterday, January 15, in Lagoa, were the motto for the presentation of this future museum space.

Since the beginning of last year, Lagoa has been working on this project that, at the beginning, had been presented as MuCid – Museum of Social and Political Movements and Citizenship.

Now, a year later, MuCid has given way to the Casa da Cidadania…but not completely.

“Over this year and a half, at the mercy of the conferences and the people we brought here, we were fine-tuning the project. The physical project is called Casa da Cidadania. MuCid is what the base was, the digital support, but it will also have a permanent exhibition part», explained Paulo Lima, anthropologist and project coordinator, to Sul Informação.

In other words: MuCid, which will incorporate an archive of oral history, and the Casa da Cidadania are two different things, but “they are connected”, being implemented “in the same place”.

Paulo Lima

“What we can say is that the Casa da Cidadania is the transformation of a space for exhibitions about what this is about citizenship, public participation and politics. At the same time, we will have a digital platform to tell us the story», added Paulo Lima.

And why this change? "We were learning", justified the anthropologist. «We have been listening to historians, anthropologists, museologists… We took the opportunity to present the project, listen to suggestions and improve», he explained.

For Luís Encarnação, mayor of Lagoa, the main objective is to «get out of that traditional concept of the museum».

“We want ours to be more than that: a house of permanent presence and reinvention, where the principles that helped to create our council can be seen, such as freedom, participation, citizenship and politics. We thought about not doing more of the same, but, instead, adding something new even to the region», he told the Sul Informação.

The project is still being assembled, namely at the estate level, but there are already some ideas.

“We are working, but there is what we call the “treasure room” which will have the objects that created the administrative identity: the banner from the end of the XNUMXth century, the council minutes or the photographs of presidents”, he explained.

According to Luís Encarnação, figures from Lagoa are also being selected, «whom we want to highlight», such as General Rocha Vieira, Remexido or the Lagoon doctor João Bentes Castelo-Branco.

The idea is to start, this year, the works in the former Paços do Concelho to inaugurate the Casa da Cidadania (and MuCid…) «in January 2021», said Luís Encarnação.

Until that happens, the International Meetings of Politics and Image were like a starting point for a new cultural dynamic that we want to create. The opening session was attended by Luís Encarnação, Adriana Nogueira, regional director of Culture of the Algarve, and Paulo Lima.

For the mayor, this is an «innovative way» of commemorating the 247 years since the creation of the municipality of Lagoa, which are commemorated today, the 16th of January.

These meetings, which have their first edition this year, include exhibitions by renowned photographers that were inaugurated this Wednesday, January 15th.

Photographer Paulo Catrica worked on architecture and ways of living, resulting in his project in the exhibition prospectus. Augusto Brázio, in turn, shows in The children of the sun: the search for the idyllic tourism and the tourist industry.

From a project about migrants, developed by photographer Lara Jacinto, resulted the exhibition entitled Paradise. These three exhibitions are on display at Centro Cultural Convento de São José.

On the other hand, Valter Vinagre exhibits his work entitled hearts on high with which he sought to document the religious confessions present in Lagoa, in the Parish Hall, next to the Igreja Matriz.

Photographer João Pina was also invited to this first edition of Encontros Política & Imagem, who shows, in the former Paços do Concelho, the work he has done in Colombia on Venezuelan refugees.

The program does not end, however, with the exhibitions – although these are an important part.

Films by Sérgio Tréfaut will also be screened, including “Rage” (on the 16th, 21:30 pm), and “waiting for paradise"and "the city of the dead” (17, 21:30). All the films will be presented at the Centro Cultural Convento de São José auditorium and will be presented by the anthropologist Ana Machado.

A conference by José Manuel Rosendo, journalist from Antena 1, on “The Urgency of Speaking of the World” is scheduled for Saturday. The closing session, at 19 pm, at the Convento de São José Auditorium, will be attended by Graça Fonseca, Minister of Culture.
