Portimão bids farewell to the European City of Sport with new pavilion, HMB and champions

Portimão was elected the best European City of Sport in 2019.

The inauguration of the Boavista Sports Pavilion, the Champions Gala and a concert by HMB. «After an intense year», December marks the end of the Portimão program – Best European City of Sport. 

This was «an ambitious project, which involved more than 550 thousand protagonists, including practitioners, spectators, volunteers and partners», says the Câmara de Portimão.

The best way to finish off big will be with the inauguration of the Boavista Sports Pavilion, scheduled for 14:30 pm on December 11, Portimão City Day, followed by the traditional Gala in Homage to Portimonenses Champions, during which they will be 632 athletes, coaches and clubs were awarded.

«As for the official closing of CED 2019, which promises to be an unforgettable spectacle», will take place on the 13th at Portimão Arena, from 21 pm, with the most memorable moments being remembered with the sound of the anthem “Believe!”.

On this festive night there will be a collective performance, with athletes and the dancer Cifrão, followed by a concert by the band HMB. On the occasion, Portimão will pass the testimony to Odivelas – European City of Sport 2020.

Although December is the last month of CED 2019, the programming does not slow down, with events such as the Portimão Half Marathon – Race of the Mediterranean Diet / TVI Running Wonders, which will take place on the 8th, from 10:00 am, at modalities of half marathon (21km), mini marathon (10km) and walking (5km), along the riverside of Portimão.

A few thousand people from various parts of the country are expected to participate, with the test broadcast nationally by TVI.

Also a reference for the 1st DEMO Karate Cup and National Cadets, Juniors and Under21 Championships, scheduled for December 7th at Portimão Arena, for the 3rd round of the Algarve Sailing Championship, which takes place in the waters of the River Arade at the weekend on the 7th and 8th of December, for the Clube Naval D. João II Open Day, on the same days, along the Ria de Alvor and for the Patinagem Gala, at 21 pm on the 00st of December at the Pavilhão Gimnodesportivo de Portimão, under the initiative from the local Skating School.

There will also be the debate “What is the impact of the European City of Sport on the community?”, taking place from 21:00 on December 5 at Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes, organized by the association Teia d' Impulsos.

The 1st S. Silvestre Firefighters Race of Portimão will also take place from 20:00 on December 29 through the streets of the city.

December will be a month marked by other important initiatives, such as a sports meeting related to the World Day of the Physically Disabled (December 3 at the Pavilion Gimnodesportivo de Portimão), the Regional Meeting of AGAP – Association of Gyms and Academies of Portugal ( December 3 at the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Municipal Library), the Volta ao Mundo – Artistic Swimming Show (10th at the Portimão Municipal Swimming Pool), the Padel Club Cup and the “Dia da Cidade” Social Pair Tournament (December 11 at Municipal Tennis Complex), or the “Dia Cidade Portimão” Tournament and the Portimão Petanca Group Anniversary Tournament (also on December 11 at Jardim das Águas Vivas).

Also noteworthy on the agenda are the Shooting Tournament “Cidade de Portimão” (7th at the Portimão Shooting Academy), the Open Day ATP (11th and 12th at the Portimão Shooting Academy, the 14th International Capoeira Meeting (13) on 15th December at the Pavilhão da EB 2,3 Prof. José Buísel), the Aquatic Festival “Cidade de Portimão” (14th December at the Portimão Municipal Swimming Pool) and the Youth Open McDonalds (18th to 22nd December at the Municipal Complex of Sneakers).

In turn, the school cross-country will have three tests, respectively promoted by the Júdice Fialho School Group (10th at the EB 2,3 Júdice Fialho), by the Bemposta School Group (10th at the Bemposta EBS) and by the Poeta António Aleixo and Eng. Nuno Mergulhão Groups (13th at the EB 2,3 D. Martinho Castelo Branco and EB 2,3 Eng. Nuno Mergulhão).

On the other hand, training continues to play, until the last minute, a role in the 2019 CED schedule, with the following actions: Technical internship in free-diving – Indoor (6th and 7th at the Mexilhoeira Sports Complex Great); Focus training “Ethics in Sport” (6th at the Museu de Portimão); triathlon workshop “Regular Area of ​​Arbitration” (7th at Manuel Teixeira Gomes Library); 55th Karate Internship (on the 21st at the Pavilhão Gimnodesportivo de Portimão); and Christmas Judo Camp (December 21-23 at the Montes de Alvor Sports Pavilion).

More events related, directly or indirectly, to sport are scheduled, including the Christmas Soiree of the Rhythmic Gymnastics Association of Portimão (December 14 at the Pavilion Gimnodesportivo Portimão), the Memorial Chess Tournament “João Vasco – Cidade de Portimão” (on the 15th, in a place to be defined), the Christmas Paddle Meeting (on the 21st at Praia da Marina de Portimão), the Passeio da Saúde (on the 18th at the Portimão Arena), the Christmas Boogie Skydive Algarve (December 19th to 31st). at the Municipal Aerodrome of Portimão), the 6th Gym Fun and Dance “O Sonho – I Want to Change the World!” (December 20th at TEMPO – Portimão Municipal Theater) and, finally, the activity for parents and children “Escorrega na Magia do Natal!” 21st at the Alvor Sports Complex).
