Vila do Bispo discusses “The Art of Teaching” on a ride by Comenius

Exhibition has toured the Algarve

A get-together on the theme “The Art of Teaching”, also related to an exhibition on the pedagogue Comenius, will take place on November 22, at 18 pm, at the Interpretative Center of Vila do Bispo.

The moment will be attended by Adelino Soares, mayor of Vila do Bispo.

“Comenius and the Art of Teaching” is the title of the international exhibition that has been circulating throughout the Algarve since its inauguration, in February this year, at the University of Algarve Library.

This exhibition has already been on display at the João de Deus Museum House, in São Bartolomeu de Messines, in the Municipal Archive of Vila Real de Santo António and is currently in the Interpretative Center of Vila do Bispo until 13 December.

With the panels translated into three languages – Portuguese, Spanish and Italian – this exhibition has already visited the city of Porto, the Spanish cities of Barcelona and Malaga, and the Italian city of Bologna.

Comenius, pedagogue of the XNUMXth century, father of pictorial teaching, universalist thinker defended that everything should be taught to everyone and totally.

His main work – the Didacta Magna – is still read and sold in several languages on a global scale. Over the centuries, Comenius' ideas were absorbed by Freemasonry and influenced other pedagogues such as Krause and Maria Montessori.

This exhibition arrives in the Algarve with added value, as it establishes a proximity between the didactic proposal of Comenius and the work of the Algarve, Messina, João de Deus, author of the Maternal Booklet.

Despite the 200 years between these two pedagogues, both defended the importance of teaching reading and counting from home, with the support of their mothers.

In a press release, the organization says that the exhibition “has been very dynamic”.

It is that, from one exhibition to another, “new books are added. This time, books from the Fundación Rosacruz Reference Library in Zaragoza were included: “The Hermetic Philosophy of Robert Fludd”, “The educational utopia of Comenius, with a preface by Jean Piaget” and also a rare edition “As complete works of Hermes Trimegistus”».

The organization also thanks «the support provided by the University of Algarve Library and Municipal Library of Faro, for the provision of rare editions, of which the editions of the Maternal Booklet stand out, especially the one for teaching in a large size classroom; or, the book coordinated by Teófilo Braga, with texts by João de Deus, published in 1898, entitled “Prosas”, which includes the article “O Sete e o Nove”, published by the press in 1858».

«This is a text that tells us about the cycle of life, highlighting the number 7 and in which it also makes a sarcastic reference to António Maria de Feliciano Castilho's Method of Sudden Reading. Only two copies of this book are known, one at the Museu João de Deus, in Lisbon, and the other – which is now presented in this exhibition – which is part of the bibliographic collection of Mário Lyster Franco, commonly known as “Algarviana” and which is in the Library of the University of Algarve», he concludes.
