International poetry has run wild in Olhão

International Poetry in the South Meeting brought dozens of poets to Olhão

Poetry was on the loose in another edition of the International Poesia a Sul Meeting, which took place in Olhão between the 18th and the 27th.

Over the course of ten days, 73 poets from 31 countries visited Olhão, who made their work known and got in close contact with the public. At the same time, other arts were given place, namely music and theatre.

Two of the highlights of this initiative by the Municipality of Olhão, which had the support of “365Algarve”, took place at the Municipal Auditorium of Olhão: the concert by Amar Guitarra and a recital by the great Portuguese-speaking poets “Vozes Poéticas da Lusofonia”, starring ambassador Lauro Moreira.

In addition to the main concert hall in Oland, there are many spaces that hosted the meeting, «especially schools, Municipal Markets, the riverside area, the Bom Sucesso caique, the historic centre, the Library, the Museum, in an event that it “decentralized” through the parishes and reached Ilha da Culatra, Beja and Seville».

A great news of this 5th editionthe event was the launch of the Authors Poesia a Sul Collection. The first three volumes are by authors Inma Luna, Chi Trung and Fernando Cabrita.

"For posterity, there are also the 57 poetic benches that, along Avenida da República, display excerpts from poems by poets invited in this 2019 edition, which invite the discovery of their respective works", added the municipality of Olhão.

For António Miguel Pina, mayor of Olhão, this literary festival constitutes «a reason for immense pride» and is, «above all, the result of an articulated work between all sectors of the municipality: Culture, Education, Communication, Maintenance , Public Procurement and municipal companies».

«Since the 3rd edition, the support of the 365 Algarve Program has been a valuable financial support for the continuous growth of the Meeting, which has been consolidating Olhão as the international capital of poetry, enriching the cultural offer of the Algarve outside the high season, and in a decentralized way», believes the mayor from Olhano, who said that «now is the time to take stock and start planning the 2020 edition».
