Albufeira hosts international swimming competition

Algarve International Meeting will bring together 450 athletes from 50 clubs

The VI Algarve International Swimming Meeting will take place on the 9th and 10th of November at the Municipal Swimming Pools in Albufeira.

This short pool event is «one of the most important in the national swimming calendar» and will count on the participation of the national team and the Andalusian national team, «with the presence of more than 450 athletes from 50 clubs, representing five countries», according to the City Council of Albufeira.

For José Carlos Rolo, mayor of Albufeira, this event, the largest held in this space in the last decade, will be «an excellent preparation for the World Swimming with Down Syndrome – DSISO to be held in 2022».

Albufeira has, moreover, the necessary conditions to host high-level sporting initiatives. "We have indoor and outdoor sports infrastructure prepared to host major events, staff up to the challenges, good weather conditions and hotel capacity to host teams and companions, whether in the case of isolated events or in the event of sports internships", defended the mayor Albufeires.

José Carlos Rolo admitted that Albufeira is not «a land with strong traditions in the sport», but highlighted the «excellent work» that Futebol Clube de Ferreiras has developed, «especially in the area of adapted swimming, where it has been adding victories, with emphasis on the performance at the DSISO World Championship in Canada, where one of the club's athletes was crowned vice-champion of the world».

The competition is organized by the Algarve Swimming Association (ANALGARVE), in collaboration with the Portuguese Swimming Federation (FPN) and with the support of the swimming section of Futebol Clube de Ferreiras and the Municipality of Albufeira.
