Pedro Ivan Gonçalves, 18, born in Moncarapacho, a student of Professor Nelson Conceição, was selected to represent Portugal in the 72nd World Accordion Cup, which will take place in Shenzhen, China.
This young man from Olhano will compete in the Senior Virtuoso level. «Pedro Ivan already has some experience in major competitions where he has stood out with relevant awards», stresses the Mito Algarvio association.
With eight years of studying this «musical instrument so difficult to perform», in May this year, in the 24th National Trophy / 5th International Accordion Competition “Cidade de Alcobaça”, Pedro Ivan Gonçalves won seven awards:
1st Prize 24th National Senior Varieté Trophy;
1st Prize 5th International Trophy of Alcobaça Senior Varieté;
1st Prize 24th National Trophy Cat. Soloist Concert (chromatic basses);
2nd Prize 5th Alcobaça International Trophy Cat. Soloist Concert (chromatic basses);
3rd Prize Cat. Franck Angelis;
1st Prize 24th National Trophy Cat. Orquestra Varieté;
1st Prize 5th International Trophy Alcobaça Orquestra Varieté;
Also in May, at the 43rd International Accordion Prize, in Castelfidardo, Italy, he won 8th place in the Junior Virtuoso category.
Last June, at the 71st Accordion World Cup, held in Kunas, Lithuania, and where João Palma, born in Loulé, also a student of Nelson Conceição, was crowned world champion, Pedro Gonçalves got 6th place in the Junior category Virtuous.
The Algarve delegation to the 72nd World Accordion Cup that will travel to China in August, composed of Pedro Ivan Gonçalves, Nelson Conceição, João Pereira, Sérgio Conceição and João Sena, has yet another "special mission" for Portugal, as the 73rd World Cup, that is, the next, will take place in the Algarve in October 2020.
João Pereira, president of Mito Algarvio – Association of Accordion Players of the Algarve, says that «Pedro Ivan's participation in the 72nd World Cup is one more proof of the competences of the teachers and students that we have in the Algarve regarding the execution of this musical instrument» .
«We are going to China to seek the witness for the 73rd World Cup, bringing it to Portugal, and to the Algarve in particular, this level of competition makes us very proud and will certainly be an event that will leave a mark on all participants, given our capacity of welcome,” he added.
