MOJU Academy will help empower young people in Olhão

Headquarters of the project "AJO - Academy for training the Youth of Olhão" is inaugurated on the 12th

The headquarters of the “AJO – Academy for training the Youth of Olhão”, the most recent project of the MOJU – Youth Movement Association in Olhão, will be inaugurated on the 12th.

This is a space aimed at children and young people from 11 to 30 years old, located in the 16 de Junho neighborhood in Olhão, more precisely on Rua da Feira.

«The AJO project focuses on the social problem of school and professional failure of children and young people. To this end, the Academia Jovem's space will have 4 functions: study support for young people at risk of failure and/or dropping out of school; training/training actions; oriented leisure activities; and project creation», describes the MOJU.

According to Nuno António, coordinator of the Academy, «the impact generated by the project will contribute to increasing the skills of young people in the intervention area, to reduce youth unemployment and to promote their active participation in society, combining the development of skills with a greater well-being and the adoption of healthier lifestyles».

The work plan of the AJO project will be implemented over 3 years, starting in January 2019. It has the strategic partnership of the Municipality of Olhão as a social investor, being co-financed under the Partnerships for the Impact of Portugal Social Innovation Program, under the community funds of CRESC Algarve 2020.

Catarina Arraes, president of the Association, considers that «the involvement of young people in the development of their communities is essential to increase the feeling of belonging and to promote an active citizenship».

"This involvement should not be seen only as support for activities aimed at young people, but in a broader dimension, where youth has an active role and is a key actor in the development of the community," he added.
