Crochet periodic table is star at CCV de Lagos

Creation of the piece involved more than one hundred people from around the world

It took a thousand hours of work, guaranteed by one hundred people aged between 6 and 93, from 14 nationalities and from five continents, to create the giant crocheted periodic table that can be seen until July at the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos .

The lacobrigense center is hosting this piece of 17 square meters (4,5 by 3,8 meters), which combines art with knowledge and which was created under the program of commemorations of the School of Sciences of the University of Minho for 2019 – International Year of the Periodic Table.

«The challenge of crochet, coordinated by biologist Alexandra Nobre (STOL – Science Throught Our Lives/ Department of Biology-Universidade do Minho), used to disseminating science using art and handicrafts, quickly became a WIP (Work in) collaborative project Progress) and without borders. The objective was to do something different, which would have an impact and promote people's attention to the issue of the Periodic Table», according to the CCV of Lagos.

This table also ends up having a lacobrigense touch, as one of the people who contributed to the elaboration of this piece was Tatiana Silva, a member of the center's team.

«The final piece weighs 13 kilos and consists of 250 crochet rectangles in A4 format (118 correspond to chemical elements, two to lanthanide and actinide insert elements and 130 white filling rectangles)», concluded the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos .
