Lands without Shadow in Olivença, between Baroque splendor and Portuguese heritage

Olivença was the chosen setting for a landmark event in the 2019 musical season, in a clear option for cultural decentralization

The Festival Terras sem Sombra reveals, in an absolute première, the CD “La Lyre d'Apollon”, by Jacques Morel (1690-1740), by Sofia Diniz. The album is presented on Saturday, March 23, at 20 pm, in the church of Santa Maria do Castelo, in Olivença, the 00th stage of the Festival that this year became Iberian.

The concert “An Imagined Journey: French Suites for Viola da Gamba” is performed by Sofia Diniz and Holger Faust-Peters (viola de gamba), Josep Maria Martí Duran (tiorba) and Fernando Miguel Jalôto (harpsichord).

«Olivença was the chosen setting for a landmark event in the 2019 musical season, in a clear option for cultural decentralization», explains the festival organizers.

Terras sem Sombra “reveals once again a link between cosmopolitanism and rurality, the avant-garde and tradition”, he adds.

“La Lyre d'Apollon”, by Jacques Morel, published in Paris in 1709, is the first book of plays for the viola de gamba.

Mobilizing the will of all and reinforcing the Iberian dialogue, this year, for the first time, Terras sem Sombra is also taking place in Spain, more specifically in the region of Extremadura.

Next weekend, March 23rd and 24th, the festival takes place in Olivença, where, in keeping with its tripartite model, on Saturday morning there is a heritage itinerary around the city that is today a symbol of coexistence and dialogue between cultures. , and on Sunday, dedicated to the defense of biodiversity, it proposes to get to know the Serra de Alor and its “dehesa” (mounted) territory better.

Olivença is today a city that has not renounced the Portuguese tradition, constituting a symbol of coexistence and dialogue between cultures. The visit, which will take place on the afternoon of Saturday, 23, from 16 pm, under the guidance of an expert in the council, Joaquín Fuentes, president of the Além-Guadiana Association, will allow us to understand the pillars of local history, as well as the main monuments and other striking aspects of the municipality's heritage and the daily lives of its people.

Apollo's Lira: Suites for viola da gamba

On the same day, at 20 pm, the most magnificent Oliventine temple, the church of Santa Maria do Castelo, will host the concert “An Imagined Journey: French Suites for Viola da Gamba”.

On stage will be four of the greatest performers of baroque music today, Sofia Diniz, Holger Faust-Peters, Josep Maria Martí Duran and Fernando Miguel Jalôto.

This is the premiere presentation of the CD “La Lyre d'Apollon”, dedicated to the first book of pieces for that instrument by Jacques Morel, the famous composer from the time of the Sun King, and which will be released by the prestigious publisher German Conditura.

Sofia Diniz and her guests call for a tour of XNUMXth century Paris and a discovery of the panoply of sounds of the viola da gamba. Typical dance moves such as the German, Leather, Sarabande e Gigue, couplets about the revelries of Spain, but also the very French ones Character pieces, which illustrate from the deepest feelings, such as the Complaint (weeping), even people and places; we will also listen to a Breton, a Spanish, an American, a Portuguese and an Italian piece. You will travel, therefore, without leaving your place.

«The concert in Olivença promises to become one of the landmark events of the 2019 musical season. That this international premiere takes place, not in Cologne, where Sofia Diniz lives and usually works, or in Madrid or Lisbon, is a symptom that something has been changing in the musical panorama, thanks to initiatives such as Terras sem Sombra, which unite cosmopolitanism and rurality, vanguard and tradition», stresses the organization.

Jardim de Deus: Serra de Alor and Dehesa

The morning of Sunday, the 24th, starting at 9:30 am, will be dedicated to the municipality's biodiversity, under the guidance of two territorial experts, Joaquín Figueredo and Norberto Antúnez, targeting the Serra de Alor.

A key place in the area, this elevation reaches 600 meters in altitude and has dense patches of pasture (mounted) and olive groves. It also preserves wooded areas, where true botanical treasures are preserved. Among the rare species, the peony, known in the region as the albardeira rose, stand out, which grows in high areas, in the middle of patches of holm oaks, holm oaks and wild olive trees; O Erodium Mouretii or watch; The Anagyris Fœtida, the only European plant pollinated by birds such as warblers; the dragon's mouth.

It is also possible to find more than 15 different species of orchids, including the barlia robertiana (giant orchid) and the Italian orchis (naked-man's weed).

This type of vegetation protects the fertile soil and supports a remarkable livestock activity: a paradise for the Iberian pig, but also for cattle, goats and sheep, hunting and bees.

All activities are free access and without prior registration, with Terras sem Sombra leaving for Beja, Elvas, Cuba, Ferreira do Alentejo, Odemira, Barrancos, Santiago do Cacém and Sines.
