Silves presents the Algarve's flora at the Spring Fair

Mostra has the support of the Chamber of Silves

The Spring Fair, which takes place this Saturday, March 16, at Fissul, in Silves, is an «excellent opportunity to discover the Algarve's flora».

The event will run from 10:00 am to 17:00 pm and is jointly organized by the Parish Council of Silves and the Mediterranean Gardening Association Portugal (MGAP) – Association of Plants and Gardens in Mediterranean Climates (APEJECM).

The initiative, which is aimed at all gardening lovers and has free entry, will promote the cultivation of plants characteristic of the Mediterranean and, more specifically, of the Barrocal of the Algarve.

According to the organization, «vNurseries specializing in drought-resistant perennial plants, herbs, fruit trees and shrubs will not be present».

"There will also be a variety of other exhibitors, with biological products, wines, essential oils, plant art and a demonstration of solar cookers", as well as specialist books, native plant seeds and advice from members of the association and local nurserymen .

In parallel with the sale of plants, there will be lectures (illustrated and free), by specialists, on Sustainable Gardening and also on “How to make your own Drought-Resistant Garden”. There will also be a space for debate on Gardens without Grass (to be confirmed).

Barrocal is one of the three ecological areas in the Algarve and has a distinct plant community. «The Barrocal areas have a known biodiversity, with a well-documented flora, and this area has a huge potential to host the most fantastic natural gardens», stresses the organization.

One of the objectives of the Associação dos Jardins Mediterrânicos, in Portugal, has been to «encourage local nurseries to broaden their range of available plants».

“The small nurseries make their own plant production, they have responded to our requests, and we hope they have benefited from the growing demand for drought resistant plants. Plants that are native to Portugal, as well as other Mediterranean climate zones, are suitable for our gardens», adds the association.
