Early elections in Castro Marim scheduled for 2 June

Dispatch that marks the date has already been published in Diário da República

Early elections in Castro Marim will be held on June 2, according to an announcement made by Carlos Miguel, secretary of state for local authorities.

O office which marks the date of the elections was published this Friday, March 15, in Diário da República.

As Carlos Miguel points out, the «resignation from the mandate of all the effective and alternate members who made up the most voted list in the municipal elections for the Castro Marim City Council» leads to the exhaustion of the possibility «of filling the vacancy of mayor ».

In the 2017 elections, Francisco Amaral was reelected mayor of Castro Marim, but he lost the majority he enjoyed in the previous term.. The PSD won the elections, but only managed to elect two elements – President Francisco Amaral and Vice President Filomena Sintra.

The PS elected as many other councilors and the fifth place in the executive was guaranteed by José Estevens, former president of the Chamber by the Social Democrats, who this time proposed elections supported by the Castro Marim Primeiro movement, which had other elements that disassociated themselves from the PSD

a juncture which proved to be very difficult to manage, right from the beginning of the mandate., with the PSD executive seeing the opposition derail many of the measures it proposed.

For this reason, Francisco Amaral, as well as Filomena Sintra, chose to resign, having ceased functions, for now, on the 21st of February.

However, Célia Brito, PS candidate for the Chamber in the last Autárquicas, already announced that he will re-apply by the socialists.
