Monuments of the Regional Directorate of Culture break record of visitors in 2018

Fortress of Sagres was the most visited monument

The monuments managed by the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, with reception structures (Fortaleza de Sagres, Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe, Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar and Roman Ruins of Milreu) have already received close to 500 thousand visitors in 2018, a record number as long as there are records.

According to the Regional Directorate of Culture, until November, these four monuments received 473.340 visitors, 10,6% more than last year (426.972 visitors).

The organization explains that “the influx of visitors to the different monuments is not symmetrical when compared to the previous year. In some properties, the trend was a slight reduction compared to last year's values, but, once again, it was in the Sagres Fortress that the most expressive growth was verified, contributing to the overall values achieved».

“Like in previous years, foreigners are the ones who flock the most, in a percentage of 85,36% against 14,64% of nationals”, adds the Regional Directorate of Culture.

However, «this trend was contradicted in the Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar, in which the number of nationals was more balanced compared to foreigners, representing 45,46% of entries».

The Regional Directorate of Culture recalls that «these properties have been boosted through the DiVaM program, with various activities of a multidisciplinary nature, which have allowed visitors and local communities to enjoy these spaces with an increase in cultural offer».

In addition to the «regular or occasional actions, maintenance and enhancement interventions are underway using applications for community and national funds, namely the CRESC ALGARVE 2020 Operational Program, in the case of the Sagres Fortress, Alcalar Megalithic Monuments and Milreu Roman Ruins ».

There are also, the organization adds, «two applications to Valorizar's Accessible Tourism Support Line – Tourism of Portugal's Support Program for the Enhancement and Qualification of the Destination, to improve accessibility in the Fortaleza de Sagres and the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe , in which case, in the first case, the application is already approved».

The Regional Directorate of Culture considers that «the work carried out in these monuments over the years has been recognized, namely the Fortaleza de Sagres with the attribution of the European Heritage Label, in 2015, and more recently the honorary title of “International Place of Culture and Peace” awarded by the International Human Rights Observatory”.

The entity also guarantees that it will continue «its work for the preservation and enjoyment of all the monuments that affect it, as a way to promote the identity of the region and the country».

These numbers appear a few days from Alexandra Rodrigues Gonçalves, the current director, to be replaced by Adriana Nogueira.
