The University of the Algarve (UAlg) celebrates 40 years this year and the celebrations will begin with the attribution of the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Joaquim Romero Magalhães, in a ceremony to be held this Wednesday, December 12, at the Grand Auditorium of the UAlg Campus of Gambelas, in Faro.
For Paulo Águas, dean of the Algarve academy, this is a «fair and deserved recognition of a brilliant academic in the Algarve, with an invaluable contribution to the study of the economic history of the region».
The proposal to award the Honoris Causa was presented by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences (FCHS) and by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Economics (FE) and unanimously approved by the Academic Senate of UAlg, on 26 September .
One of the highlights of the ceremony will contemplate the Laudatio, given by Maria Leonor Freire Costa, professor at the Superior Institute of Economics and Management of the University of Lisbon and godmother of the honoree, followed by the imposition of the doctoral insignia and the speech of the new Doctor.
The ceremony will feature interventions by the president of the General Council Vitor Neto, the representative of non-teaching staff Conceição José, the president of the Academic Association Pedro Ornelas, the representative of teachers Tomasz Boski, ending with the intervention of~Paulo Águas.
During the ceremony, the University's medals will also be awarded to employees who have completed 25 years of service, diplomas to new doctors and, with the support of Caixa Geral de Depósitos, the “University of the Algarve Prize” will also be awarded to graduates with merit in the 2016/2017 school year.
Joaquim Antero Romero Magalhães was born in Loulé in 1942. He studied at Escola Normal and Liceu in Faro. At the ceremony of his retirement in 2012, he referred to his journey in the city of Faro as having been decisive in his training, namely because of the contact he had there with the most disadvantaged classes in the city.
He graduated in History at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra, in 1967. He obtained a Doctor's degree, in 1984, at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra and was part of the faculty of that Faculty. In 1994, he was appointed full professor at that University.
During his career as a university professor, he was visiting professor at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, in Paris (1989 and 1999), at the University of São Paulo (1991 and 1997) and at Yale University (2003). He coordinated the volume “Alvorecer da Modernidade”, vol. III of the History of Portugal directed by José Mattoso (1993). He recently published “Come the Republic! 1906-1910” (2009). In the University Press he is bringing together a scattered work with the generic title of Miunças, three volumes (2011-2012).
Joaquim Romero Magalhães was also president of the Coimbra University Students' Theater (1963), president of the Academic Association of Coimbra (1964), deputy to the Constituent Assembly of the Portuguese Republic (1975-1976), secretary of State for Pedagogical Guidance of the presided over governments by Mário Soares (1976-1978), president of the Board of Directors of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra (1985-1989 and 1991-1993); General Commissioner of the National Commission for the Commemorations of the Portuguese Discoveries (1999-2002), and director of Oceanos magazine (1999-2001).
In addition to this, he was also a member of the Consultative Committee for the Commemorations of the Centenary of the Republic (2009-2011).
He currently directs the magazine “Anais do Município de Faro” On April 18, 2012, he retired, having delivered his “last lesson” at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra.
«Joaquim Romero Magalhães has collaborated with the University of the Algarve since its inception, defending this institution in one of the most difficult moments of its installation», says UAlg.
In the seminars organized in 1982 and 1983, under the theme “Mediterranean Portugal, the Algarve in the Portuguese context” and aimed at better integration of Portuguese emigrants on vacation in the Algarve, Joaquim Romero Magalhães was one of the personalities who gave lessons within the scope of the programs of these achievements .
His collaboration later extended to some editions of the Master's in “History of the Algarve”, ensuring thematic blocks of the school component of that degree.
He participated in several doctoral juries that led to the qualification of the teaching staff at UAlg. «One can refer to the cases of António Rosa Mendes or José Carlos Vilhena Mesquita, creating a very close relationship with the former that was abruptly cut off with the death of this professor at the University of Algarve. Together with Manuel Viegas Guerreiro, he promoted the publication of two descriptions of the Algarve in the 1577th century: Corografia do Reino do Algarve (1600), by Frei João de S. José, and História do Reino do Algarve (circa XNUMX), by Henrique Fernandes Sarrão. Two fundamental texts to understand the history of the Algarve.
Its bibliography includes numerous works on the Algarve Económico, focusing specifically on the XNUMXth, XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries.
