Frances H. Arnold, awarded this Wednesday, 3 October, with the Nobel Prize for Chemistry, attended, in July, a congress organized by the University of Algarve.
At the time, the chemical engineer gave a plenary lesson at the opening of the 24th IUPAC – International Conference on Physical Organic Chemistry (ICPOC 24).
In the same opening session, Bernard Feringa, Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2016, also participated.
According to the Swedish Academy, Frances H. Arnold, from the California Institute of Technology, in Pasadena (USA), received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her work with the «directed evolution of enzymes».
Frances H. Arnold is a chemical engineer specializing in biotechnology. His pioneering work in directed evolution, with impact in areas involving enzymatic catalysis, for example in biomedicine, has already earned him an award by President Barack Obama and the Millennium Technology award in 2016.
