Loulé Chamber launched an international public tender for the construction of the new D. Dinis School, in Quarteira, whose work was almost started in May this year. The project it was even presented to the school community, but the contractor “refused to go forward” due to financial problems.

Ao Sul Informação, Vítor Aleixo, mayor of Loulé, explained that, after having won a first tender, "the contractor withdrew, claiming that market prices had skyrocketed."

“We were told that there was no possibility of moving work teams, nor was there a place to accommodate people. For the contractor, it was economically impossible to start the work», explained the mayor.

Now, the municipality has launched a new international public tender, whose notice was published on the 25th of September, with the objective of starting the work in a school that is degraded. As for the start date of the project, Aleixo does not advance any predictions for the time being.

The new school will have 24 air-conditioned classrooms equipped with interactive whiteboards, in addition to two laboratories, two ICT rooms, one for music and another two for the Visual and Technological Education (EVT) subject. In addition to this, there is also a room for the Technological Education (ET) subject.

The entire building will be built from scratch, but the entrance to the school will be in the same area as it is now: in front of the car park.

The entrance will have a large atrium. On the left side will be the most administrative spaces. The right side will house the two wings with classrooms and a Resource Center. In the reception area, there will be four elements with images of the old school to perpetuate the memory of what that space was.

As for the new Pavilhão Gimnodesportivo de Quarteira, the project of which has since been completed, will be built at the rear of the school.

«We joined, in the same competition, the two works: the school and the pavilion. This means that the project that is now up for tender is worth 12 million euros”, said Vítor Aleixo to our newspaper.

The PSD/Loulé has already gone public to contest the impasse in the works of Escola D. Dinis. "What has always been assumed to be one of the main bets of the mayor elected by the PS continues to mark the pace, without knowing the start date of a work that will take at least two years to be completed", say the Social Democrats.

«At a time when the municipality's coffers are increasingly full – deposits in banks already exceed 80 million euros -, and after the former executive led by the PSD has left the project in the portfolio, it is impossible to find valid reasons to justify this situation,” the statement also says.

Confronted with these words, Aleixo considers the statement “hypocritically ignorant”.

“My reaction is that the PSD statement is not honest. Occurrences of these, of tenders that are deserted or that, at the time of starting the work, the contractors refuse, are happening all over the country», he concluded.
