Six metallic railway bridges on the Southern Line, in the Alentejo and the Algarve, are undergoing anti-corrosive treatment works, under the responsibility of the company Infraestruturas de Portugal.

These are the bridges of Garvão II, Totenique, Consulta, Padronito, Mira and Barranco Longo, located on the stretch of the Southern Line that crosses the municipalities of Ourique, Odemira and Silves.

This preventive maintenance intervention, in order to reinforce the reliability and safety conditions of the railway infrastructure, represents an investment of around 800 thousand euros and has an execution period of 210 days.

The performance of these works, carried out by IP periodically, «is of utmost importance for the preservation and maintenance of metal structures, mitigating the harmful effects of exposure to various agents, such as humidity, salinity or pollution», he stresses. the company.

On the Southern Line, there are 180 bridges, 33 of which are metallic.

2.358 bridges are part of the national railway network, of which 547 are metal bridges – some of them centuries old and of high historical and symbolic value – and which, thanks to the efforts of preservation and maintenance, remain in service without limitations.
