A classification as a National Treasure of the Roman Mosaic of the Ocean God, the most emblematic piece of the Municipal Museum Faro, is «a pride for Faro and for the Algarve», considered the mayor of Faro Rogério Bacalhau, speaking to the Sul Informação.

“We are all to be congratulated, in particular the Museum team who recovered the mosaic and sought out patrons to help them – with our support, of course. So the first word goes to them. The second is for the municipality of Faro, which had never had a National Treasury and now has it», he added.

Despite being a day of celebration, Rogério Bacalhau remembers the long road that had to be covered to obtain the distinction, which, he said, was marked by the difficulty in obtaining information from the central power.

“The bureaucratic process took a long time. Until now, there was a time when we thought they didn't want to recognize the mosaic or that there was something there. But, fortunately, everything came to fruition," he said.

The president of the Chamber of Faro ended up finding out the good news through the article that the Sul Informação published this afternoon. “I didn't know I was going to the Council of Ministers today, I thought I was still there in the secretariat. And it wasn't for lack of requests for information that I didn't know about it», he assured.

Now, all that's left is the publication of the decision in Diário da República, to make the mosaic of the God Ocean official as a National Treasure.
