Current wharf on Ilha de Tavira

There's no getting away from it: the construction work of a new pier on Ilha de Tavira will take a summer, since its execution period is 12 months. But, guaranteed Environment Minister João Matos Fernandes, in the next high season it will be possible to go to the beach on Ilha de Tavira, by boat, "in comfort" and without jeopardizing the use of this bathing area, which is much sought after by residents and visitors.

Although he does not admit that the works may be suspended, in 2018, the Environment minister has "no doubt" about one thing: "next summer, with comfort, it will be possible to access the island of Tavira by boat."

The member of Government was yesterday, 21st of August, in Tavira, to assist and ratify, together with the Minister of the Sea, the tripartite protocol that defines the financing model for this work, which will cost 2,5 million euros.

Half of the necessary budget, 1,25 million euros, will be guaranteed by the Polis Ria Formosa Society, which has already launched the public tender to carry out the project. The remaining amount will be guaranteed, in equal parts, by the Chamber of Tavira and by Docapesca.

The intervention, which has long been claimed and which will improve "the conditions of comfort and safety" for users of the Island, foresees not only the creation of a new wharf, with four distinct boarding areas, but also intervening in the waterfront ramp, to vehicle access, on the Island side.

João Matos Fernandes believes that, «if the competition goes well, the work will begin this year». «We are sorry to “invade” the next bathing season. Our greatest wish was that she managed to do it by the end of June, but that is impossible. With the work as a deadline of 12 months, it would always catch the summer», he said.

Future wharf of Ilha de Tavira

The project foresees the removal of the current wharf and its replacement by a multipurpose structure. The idea is to “strengthen the pier for loading/unloading passengers and loading/unloading”, while adding new lighting, according to Sociedade Polis.

On the dock itself, four distinct areas will be created. Two of them are intended for career boats, with one of the areas serving the river line that departs from Tavira and the other that departs from the 4 Águas. The other pontoons will be used for loading and unloading and for the use of taxi boats and maritime tourism companies.

The other intervention area, where the slipway ramp will be installed, is right in front of the Cais das 4 Águas, an area accessible by vehicles from the island – currently, this is where the island's garbage is collected, to bring him to the mainland.

The intervention also includes dredging, to facilitate maneuvers in front of the new wharf, and the placement of solar panels.

The construction work of the new wharf and the slipway ramp on Ilha de Tavira is part of a batch of interventions worth 22 million euros that Polis Ria Formosa wants to put up for tender before the end of the year, when it will expire. At the moment, in addition to this undertaking, it is also open for competition. the redevelopment of the gardens and Avenida 5 de Outubro, in Olhão.

Still in 2017 - even because it cannot be otherwise, so that interventions can be framed by the Polis Program - the tender for the construction of the new bridge to Praia de Faro, dredging will be carried out in the Ria de Alvor and in the bars of Armona and Fuseta, and a new Beach Plan will be created for Ancão.

«This new pier is a very important work, which will be launched by Sociedade Polis, but which has great help from Docapesca and Ilha de Tavira», summarized João Campos Fernandes, who stressed that «it would be of no use to Polis to have half the budget. necessary', if the two partners did not appear.

Its implementation is possible due to «a new look at Polis» introduced by the current Government, which makes this program «something that aims to requalify this territory of the Ria Formosa and ensure that traditional activities are maintained here and are able to continue. develop”, defended the minister.
