Alcoutim, Portimão, Silves and Vila do Bispo are the Algarve candidates for Municipality of the Year Portugal 2017, an initiative promoted by the University of Minho that aims to recognize and reward good practices in projects implemented by municipalities with remarkable impacts on the territory, economy and society, that promote growth, inclusion and/or sustainability.

This contest chooses a national winner, but also at the level of each region of the country. The winners will be announced on the 27th of July, at a ceremony that will take place in Fundão, the municipality that won the national award in 2016.

Among the Algarve candidates there is a municipality that has already won the main distinction. Vila do Bispo was the national (and regional) winner of the 2015 edition of this initiative, with the “Sagres Bird Watching & Nature Activities Festival” and is again nominated, having presented, this time, the “Project U35 – The Route and Sinks of a German Submarine in the Seas of Sagres in the Context of the 1st World War".

Alcoutim chose to apply for the “Smuggling Festival – Arts Traffic in the Guadiana”, which earned him, for now, a place among the four Algarve candidates for the award.

Silves, in turn, put forward a proposal that combines the environmental and civil protection dimensions. The project “Environmental Rehabilitation of the São Bom Homem estate”, where trees have already been planted, as a compensatory measure for the fires that ravaged this county in 2016.

Portimão is also going to the final of the competition, after having applied for the project "Start Work II - Exhibition of Education, Professional Training, Entrepreneurship and Employment".
