Monte Gordo_03For now, only two beach supports will be demolished, degraded and abandoned structures, but the idea is that the requalification of the beach in Monte Gordo continue "right after the bathing season".

The initial operation is scheduled for next Monday, according to the Sul Informação, and will allow to tear down two points that “they are illegal and have no one anymore”, according to the mayor of Vila Real de Santo António Luís Gomes.

“There are those who are afraid of demolitions. We, in VRSA, don't. We here want them to move forward! Because it means qualification and giving opportunity to economic agents who are already there to work more and better", assured the mayor, on the sidelines of a session that served to inaugurate the new municipal tourism office in Manta Rota and the new image of the beaches in this area of the municipality.

Monte Gordo_aerial view“This work is essential. the beach of Monte Gordo, as it is, shames us. Why? Because it has equipment that no longer meets the quality standards we have in our tourism and in today's societies. Therefore, it is unacceptable to be as it is», he defended.

Luís Gomes demanded an effort from the Government to “launch the procedures for the redevelopment of the beach front of Monte Gordo», bearing in mind that it is the executive, through the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), which is responsible for implementing the Coastal Waterfront Planning Plan.

In statements to the Sul Informação, the regional director of APA Sebastião Teixeira confirmed that it is the intention of this entity «to draw up a plan for the rehabilitation of Praia de Monte Gordo», which allows to continue, «after the end of the current bathing season», the work that will now begin.

Luís Gomes stated, for his part, that “the Chamber of VRSA is willing to collaborate in whatever way it can”, not least because it has been preparing for it.

“There is a set of measures that are more difficult for people to assimilate, which are not implemented in a scattered way. We don't put in parking meters just to go into people's pockets, we don't apply a tourist tax to go into tourists' pockets. We take these decisions so that we can reinvest in qualification», he assured.
