Words“Resilience” was the most searched word by more than 25 million visitors to the Priberam Dictionary: both in accesses from Portugal, and in those made by users from Brazil, the word appears as the most searched for throughout 2015.

However, the rest of the Top 10 of the most searched words already reflects the cultural and socio-political differences of each of the countries. This is how “indigitar” is the second most searched word by Portuguese users of the Priberam Dictionary, while “procrastinate” appears as the second ranked term in the Top 10 of accesses originating in Brazil.

In addition, throughout the year, the most searched words on certain days directly reflected the most relevant world or national events: from “capping” to “xenophobia”, passing through “impeachment” or “pirop”, the Priberam Dictionary was used to answer questions about the meaning of the most used words in everyday life.

More than 25 million unique visitors

In 2015 the website do Priberam Dictionary registered more than 25 million unique visitors: in Portugal there was an increase of 7% in the number of accesses, in Angola 15%, in Mozambique 30%, in Timor-Leste 20%, in São Tomé and Príncipe 40%, in Guinea-Bissau 49% and in Macau 12%.

Interestingly, the greatest growth was registered from Kenya, where the number of accesses more than quadrupled, becoming, in 2015, the 11th country with the most users.

Women continue to consult more the Priberam Dictionary (62,8%) and, in terms of origin, the leadership by country belongs to Brazil. It follows Portugal and the United States of America. When coming from cities, Lisbon is ahead of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro:

The first city not belonging to a CPLP country is New Delhi, which comes in 56th place, followed by Madrid in 60th and London in 62nd.

In terms of platforms, accesses to the Priberam Dictionary also reflected the accelerated transition to mobile platforms: accesses to the website via smartphones rose 46% compared to 2014.
