The company Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) is going to clean "as soon as possible tomorrow morning" the inscriptions inciting hatred and xenophobia that today appeared painted on the walls of the Algoz stop on the Algarve Railway.
A source from IP's press office told the Sul Informação that the company “completely repudiates any type of vandalism”, considering it “especially horrible”.
The neo-Nazi messages inscribed on the walls were denounced by the secretariat of the District Coordinator of Faro and by the group of Silves of the Left Block, which asked that «the competent entities such as the Municipal Council, the Parish Council of Algoz-Tunes and the Infrastructures of Portugal, urgently remove the offenses expressed on the walls of the Algoz stop».
On the other hand, Mário Godinho, vice-president of the Chamber of Silves, also contacted by Sul Informação, said that the municipality thanks "the call for attention" and that it will "immediately officiate the Infrastructures of Portugal, entity that is responsible for the Algarve Line and the structures, such as the stopovers, to clean these inscriptions".
"We are going to work as soon as possible so that these sentences, which we reject, are erased", reinforced the mayor.
The inscriptions appeared precisely today, January 27, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which marks 71 years since the liberation, by Soviet troops, at the end of World War II, from the extermination camps of the Jewish people.
"It is therefore regrettable that, after so many decades, there may still be those who still defend Hitler's horrendous ideas, anti-Jewish hostility, anti-Semitism", stress the regional and local structures of the Left Bloc, in their email from complaint sent to newsrooms.
«This is what the Algarve population, namely Silves, realized in the public space of their municipality this morning, when faced with xenophobic, racist offenses against ethnic and even Islamophobic minorities, at the Algoz stop, on the railway line of the Algarve».
In its complaint email, BE stresses that "expressed racism, Islamophobia and xenophobia reveal fear, hatred, hostility, prejudice and perpetuate derogatory and negative stereotypes about people"
The Left Block rejects “negative images in public space; attacks, abuse and violence; any and all types of discrimination; lack of recognition and respect in public institutions and populations».
Blocists further consider that "the racism, Islamophobia and xenophobia expressed involve ignorance and misinformation, often sustained and perpetuated by the interests of sectoral groups", "involve the attribution to an entire community of the same undifferentiated negative qualities, despite being observable in only a few members of that community", "it manifests itself in different ways - it can be malicious and direct, but also subtle and indirect, it can be expressed through institutional practices as well as by individuals" and "it is invasive, it can affect and affects all aspects of life”.
Therefore, concludes BE, "so, for now and urgently, this wall of shame that nothing dignifies the Algarveans must be covered".
