Workers from the Social Security Institute met yesterday, Wednesday, in front of the district center of this body, in Faro, to protest against the professional requalification (transition to special mobility) of 196 employees, currently being carried out by Social Security, «which marks the beginning of the process announced by the Government to dismiss 700 workers» of this public institute.
In the Algarve, around 200 people joined the national initiative “Embrace Social Security”, convened by the Union of Public Administration Workers (SINTAP), with the support of the inter-union UGT.
«The workers who formed the “Embrace Social Security” in Faro, demonstrated, in this way, concern and solidarity in the defense of jobs at the Social Security Institute, in particular of colleagues who, in the Algarve, were considered surplus and thrown for requalification (special mobility) without respect for their labor rights». described SINTAP/Algarve in a press release.
The mobilization of around two hundred workers was highlighted by the regional coordinator of this union João Barnabé, who revealed that, in the Algarve, «many workers now involved in professional requalification would be performing functions higher than those of their professional category, and it is incomprehensible that, as thanks for the long years of services rendered, earning below what they deserved, the Social Security gave them a notification to go on to the requalification process».
Daniel Santana, from UGT-Algarve, who supported the initiative carried out at the regional level, classified the requalification announced by the Government as being nothing more than “a collective dismissal of civil servants in the absence of the unions”. Still, he expressed hope that the process could still be reversed.
Within the scope of the action "Embrace Social Security", several plenary sessions of workers have already been held, as well as a petition and an ongoing public petition, "through which it intends to sensitize the Government and deputies of the Assembly of the Republic to the need to protect the jobs in question and the Public Social Security'.
