A3 ICOM posterPortimão was the city chosen for, on 31 October, the Portuguese National Commission of the International Council of Museums (ICOM-Portugal) to hold its 2014 Autumn Meetings.

With the theme "Museums and Management: New Bridges for Society", the Meetings taking place for the first time in the Algarve will feature the participation of Portuguese lecturers and other European colleagues who are members of ICOM, who will present "relevant examples of museum management , with success stories and initiatives within the scope of various types and museological realities».

The Museum of Portimão «seemed to us a privileged place for this Meeting, not only from the perspective of decentralizing the initiatives of ICOM Portugal that we intend to continue to develop, but also because it is a museum of recognized national and international merit and a good credit card. -visit the Algarve and its museology», stresses that body.

At the Meeting, different approaches and the results obtained will be presented, as well as Portuguese cases with positive proposals on the role of museums and their professionals, in the connection with communities, cultural tourism, companies, local, inter-municipal and university entities, in articulation through networks, partnerships and other systems for sharing resources.

«These Meetings and these “New Bridges for Society”, which museums must build, stimulate and develop, are intended to be a strong contribution to reflection and debate on the challenges and plural paths on the role of museums in management and enhancement the heritage, scientific and cultural resources of their communities and also a contribution that brings realism and hope to the national museological context», stresses ICOM.

The following speakers are confirmed: Wim De Vos (ICOM Executive Board), Clara Frayão Camacho (Museologist, DGPC Advisor), Susana Soto (Director of the San Telmo Museum, San Sebastian) and Karmele Barandiaran (Development and Public Areas , Museu S. Telmo), José Pedro Sousa Dias (Director of the Museums of the University of Lisbon), José Gameiro (Director of the Museum of Portimão) and Paulo Costa Pinto (Project Manager for Culture and Tourism of the Intermunicipal Community of Ave).
