The contract for the landscape renovation of the Santa Luzia to Pedras d'El Rei waterfront will start in the second half of this year, announced today the City Council of Tavira.

To create conditions for the start of the work, the Municipality of Tavira signed a protocol with the company Polis Litoral da Ria Formosa to «establish the bases for technical and financial cooperation» for the project.

The estimated value of the work is 673 thousand euros, with 58,2% of the funding coming from POAlgarve21, 17% from PIT, 6,8% of the Municipality's share capital in Polis, and the remaining 18% from additional funding from County.

The area to be worked on is, as the Câmara de Tavira points out in a press release, “an eminently urban section that establishes the border between the Ria Formosa and two consolidated areas of the municipality”, Santa Luzia and Pedras d'El-Rei.

Currently, the existing connection between these two nuclei is made «in poor conditions, through a sidewalk, in poor condition».
On the other hand, the existing furniture is “inadequate” and the paving of the pedestrian path is “largely non-existent”.

In this sense, the project aims to "enhance the area", through the creation of sidewalks with the inclusion of rest areas and urban furniture, parking places, in particular, along the access to Barril beach, cycle paths and the framing with the lagoon surroundings.

The concept goes through «to relate, urbanistically, the marginal of the village of Santa Luzia to Pedras d'El Rei, enhancing mobility and recreation».

The project has an expected duration of seven months.

Last August, the Polis Society launched the competition for the requalification of Quatro Águas, where the embarkation pier for Ilha de Tavira is located. At the time, the project's promoters estimated that this work would start in early 2014, to be inaugurated in early 2015.
