Gilberto Viegas, who was mayor of Vila do Bispo for 12 years, having lost it in the last municipal elections, by just over 100 votes, to the socialist Adelino Soares, is once again the PSD candidate for that municipality.

Gilberto Viegas, 54 years old, electrical engineer by training and current regional director of Economy, was mayor of Vila do Bispo between 1998 and 2009.

The PSD's National Political Commission announced the approval of 120 candidacies for this year's local elections in the 18 districts of the continent and in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

Among the approved candidacies are included those from eight district capitals – Beja, Évora, Faro, Leiria, Portalegre, Setúbal, Vila Real and Viseu – and also Funchal.

In the Algarve, eight more candidacies for as many Municipal Councils were approved. Of this wave, only two are re-applications of acting mayors: Jose Inacio Marques Eduardo, in Lagoa, and Rui Andre, in Monchique.

The national PSD also approved Rogerio Cod, current vice president of the Chamber of Faro, Nuno Serafim, in Lagos, Pedro Castelo Xavier, in Portimão, Eduardo Cruz, in Olhão and Rui Eusébio, in São Brás de Alportel.
