The exhibition «The Signs of Everyday Life – gestures, marks and symbols of Al-Andalus» opens today, 31st, at 18 pm, at the Municipal Museum of Archeology of Silves.

At the opening, Cláudio Torres will be present. director of the Campo Arqueológico de Mértola, and Isabel Soares, president of the Chamber of Silves.

The exhibition, which is part of the program of the X International Congress «The Medieval Ceramics in the Mediterranean», presents examples of objects found in excavations from the Islamic period in the West of the Iberian Peninsula, the Gharb al-Andalus, clarifying some of their less obvious meanings.

Taking into account that the preserved objects from the Islamic past show signs that need to be deciphered and interpreted, this exhibition is organized according to three main axes: Symbols, Gestures and Marks, which are intended to demonstrate, respectively, images representing abstract ideas, aspects of the objects that illustrate the customs and experiences of the people who used them and signs left on the objects by their use.

From bowls to insignia, scapulae, pots, fragments, tiles, canteens, amulets, pitchers, lanterns and tubs, there are countless objects in this exhibition, created by the Archaeological Field of Mértola, which were found in various locations, such as Mértola, Silves, Palmela, Tavira, Vilamoura, Albufeira, Moura and Alarcos (Spain).

The exhibition «The Signs of Everyday Life – Gestures, Marks and Symbols in Al-Andalus» can be visited until February of next year.
