Sérgio Ribeiro (Efapel-Glassdrive), Samuel Caldeira (Carmim-Prio-Tavira) and Hélder Oliveira (Onda-Boavista) are the three favorites to win the Portuguese Cup in cycling, in Elite, which will be decided next Sunday, 17 June, with the dispute for the last scoring event, the Volta a Albergaria-a-Velha.
The rankings are still open, and a race lit by the trophy is expected, both in the professional and under-23 levels.
The race will have 155,7 kilometers, starting (11:45) and finishing (15:30) at Avenida Dr. José Homem de Albuquerque. The layout is far from easy, as cyclists will have to overcome four mountain counts.
A heated fight for the Portuguese Cup is expected. In elite there are eight runners with mathematical possibilities of reaching the trophy. The favoritism falls on the first three – Sérgio Ribeiro (Efapel-Glassdrive), Samuel Caldeira (Carmim-Prio-Tavira) and Hélder Oliveira (Onda-Boavista) -, as the third is just ten points off the lead.
Fourth-placed Edgar Pinto (LA-Antarte), running in his homeland and 30 points off the first place, should also have a say.
Among the under-23s there is a clear dominance of Liberty Seguros/Feira/Specialized, but mathematically there are still four cyclists able to reach the first place.
Portugal Marietel Olympic Cross Country Cup with finale in Torres Vedras
This weekend, Torres Vedras will be the capital of off-road cycling. It is in that city that, on Sunday, from 10:00 am, in the Cucos area, the sixth and final competition of the Marietel Olympic Cross Country Cup of Portugal (XCO) will be held.
Similar to what happens on the road, also in the XCO Cup the outcome is unpredictable in some categories, including the elite. Mário Costa (ASC-Bike Zone) commands, but has “on his leg” Tiago Ferreira (B&Esse-Infotre Protek), and there are also other betetistas in a position to discard the favorites.
The Torres Vedras velocipedic weekend does not stop with the XCO Marietel Cup of Portugal. On the same day, also at 10:00 am in Cucos, the 4th Inter-Regional Meeting of Cycling Schools in the center and south of the country will take place. The day before, at the Parque Verde da Várzea, the participants in the second stage of the Liberty Seguros Trial Bike Cup of Portugal came into action. The bold maneuvers start at 14:00.
Young and old run in Minho
The youth teams and road veterans will demand Minho this weekend. On Saturday, the cadets and juniors will run the 24th Circuito de Avidos, Famalicão, starting at 14:30 pm.
On the same date and at the same time, the veterans hit the road for the 6th Circuito Roda de Quichães, in Fafe. On Sunday, at 10:00 am, the 56th edition of the Circuito de Santo António de Amares, a junior competition, will take place.
Mountain bike marathons also fill Sunday's schedule. At 10:00 am starts the 1st Marathon in Vale de Rans, Penafiel, scoring for the Porto XCM Cup. Half an hour earlier, the XNUMXnd Rota da Mamoa begins, the second race of the Regional de Marathons of Aveiro.
At 9:00 am, the kickoff for the second marathon of the Algarve Cup, which will be disputed in Conceição de Faro. Still at 9:00 am, the XNUMXst Douro Pombalino Marathon starts at Peso da Régua.
The 4th MTB Azenhas do Neiva, running on the Esposende and Viana do Castelo forest trails, is scheduled for the same day and at the same time.
