The City Council is going to inaugurate the works to improve the Alcoutim Castle on Saturday, March 31st, at 10:00 am.

The ceremony will include the presentation of the catalog “10 Years of Archaeological Works from the Neolithic to the Roman”, by Alexandra Gradim and João Luís Cardoso and the presentation of the watercolor exhibition “O Castelo”, by the painter Carlos Luz.

Located in the heart of the village of Alcoutim, the castle is currently the most important and well-known tourist spot in the county.

The target of renovation works, Alcoutim castle has gained a new lease of life and is now more accessible and inviting to visit.

The idea was to make the monument more accessible and functional and, at the same time, more attractive to the visitor. To this end, Alcoutim City Council defined three interventions in the castle – placing protection on the walls, building a walkway in the Archeology Center and replacing the roof and kitchen.

The guardrails raised on the walls, valued at €55.661,96, finally made them safe to visit. Protected, the visitor can now enjoy the landscape that the altitude of the walls offers over the Alcouteneja village and its neighbour, Sanlúcar de Guadiana.

In the Archeology Center, there is now a walkway with glass floors, which allows better access to the archaeological space and your visit in better conditions.

The exhibition of the nucleus “Archaeological Heritage of Alcoutim” was also subject to renovation and expansion, and is now more complete and valued. This intervention is valued at 88.464,95 euros.

The kitchen is located in one of the areas of the castle with the best view over the Guadiana river. The place is often used by the municipality of Alcoutim as a stage for tourist and cultural events.

The work was awarded for 61.312,07 euros and the space was completely restructured. The materials were replaced by others in treated wood, enhancing the archaeological piece (Adarve and Baluarte do Castelo).

All of these works were supported by the Operational Program for Cross-border Cooperation Portugal-Spain for 75% of their value and are part of the Guaditer project.
