Half of those unemployed in the third quarter of 2023 remained without a job in the last quarter, with almost 25% finding work, the National Statistics Institute (INE) announced today.

According to statistics on flows between states in the labor market, of the total number of people unemployed in the third quarter, 51,9% remained unemployed in the fourth quarter (169,4 thousand), 24,5% became employed (80,0 thousand ) and 23,5% became inactive (76,8 thousand).

Of the total number of people who were employed in the third quarter, 95,6% (4.795,2 thousand) remained in that state in the fourth quarter, while 1,8% became unemployed (90,9 thousand) and 2,6% became unemployed (129,4 thousand) inactivity (XNUMX thousand).

INE says that the result is that the net flow of employment (total entries minus total exits) between quarters was negative in 35 thousand people, while the net flow of unemployment was positive in 28,5 thousand people. Thus, the total number of people who became unemployed (185,2 thousand) was higher than the total number of people who left that state (156,8 thousand).

By gender, INE estimates that 20,3% of unemployed men (30,2 thousand) and 28,1% of unemployed women (49,8 thousand) in the third quarter transitioned to employment in the last quarter. In the same period, 22,6% of men (33,7 thousand) and 24,3% of women (43,1 thousand) who were unemployed became inactive.

Still from the third to the fourth quarter of 2023, 30,3% of short-term unemployed people (62,3 thousand) and 14,9% of inactive people belonging to the “potential workforce” (22,1 thousand) transitioned to employment .

In the same period, 11,3% of people who were self-employed (79,2 thousand) and 22,1% of people who were unemployed (72,0 thousand) moved into employment.

The data released today also indicates that of the total number of employees who, in the third quarter, had a fixed-term employment contract or another type of contract, 20,6% started to have an open-ended contract in the fourth quarter (155,1 ,XNUMX thousand).

Still of the number of people who, in the third quarter of 2023, had a part-time job, 20,7% started working full-time in the fourth quarter (84,8 thousand).

Comparing 2023 with 2022, INE indicates that of the total number of people who were unemployed in 2022, 36,0% (114,8 thousand) remained in that state in 2023, while 41,0% started to have a job (130,7 thousand ) and 23,1% became inactive (73,6 thousand).
