Maritime Authority and APS test emergency response at the Port of Faro

Exercise involved operatives from various security forces

Train “command and control procedures” in responding to emergency situations at the Commercial Port of Faro was the objective of a port protection exercise promoted by the National Maritime Authority, in collaboration with the Port Administration of the Port of Faro, yesterday, December 22nd.

The initiative was carried out within the scope of the International Code for the Protection of Ships and Port Facilities (ISPS Code), promoted by the Security, Protection and Environment nucleus of the Administration of the Ports of Sines and Algarve S.A.

This exercise, coordinated by the Port Captain and local Commander of the Maritime Police of Faro, came from an anonymous telephone call to the port terminal concierge, reporting the existence of an explosive device on the pier wall, where a Navy naval unit was expected to dock», according to the National Maritime Authority.

«Means from the local Maritime Police Command of Faro, in order to constitute a security device composed of a vessel, which ensured the closure of the wet area adjacent to the pier, and two dismounted teams which, in conjunction with the port security service, guaranteed the security perimeter of the port area» , he added.

After the intervention of the Maritime Police, in conjunction with the Port Authority and combined efforts with the PSP and the Judiciary Police, «it was possible to guarantee the necessary security conditions so that port activities could resume normality and the docking of the Navy ship could be carried out safely”.

Around two dozen members of the Maritime Police, Port Authority, PSP, Judiciary Police and Civil Protection, as well as the Customs of Faro, the Health Authority and the Security Information Service (SIS).
