Results of the iHERITAGE project presented in Tavira

Portuguese partner of this European project is the University of Algarve

The results of iHERITAGE, a project financed by the European Union whose Portuguese partner was the University of Algarve (UAlg) and was coordinated by Alexandra Gonçalves, director of the Escola Superior de Gestão, Hotelaria e Turismo, will be presented on Monday, the day 27, at 10 am, at Escola Secundária de Tavira.

The event, which will also mark the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the registration of the Mediterranean Diet as Intangible Cultural Heritage, «aims to present the project to students, publicizing the results of the synergies created between iHERITAGE Portugal and partners such as the Centro de Ciência Viva de Tavira, Tavira City Council, CRESC Algarve 2020, among others», according to UAlg.

The iHERITAGE Portugal team will present their project, as well as the digital brochures created within the scope of the iHERITAGE ICT Mediterranean Platform for UNESCO cultural heritage, funded by the European Union through the ENI CBC Med Program.

Portugal has participated in this program over the last few years, «which aims to promote and disseminate UNESCO's Mediterranean Intangible Cultural Heritage through the introduction of new technologies and virtual experiences with a view to innovating traditional narratives, involving partners, research and the community in this process» .

In Portugal, the project was represented by the University of Algarve and the focus of iHERITAGE Portugal was to promote the Mediterranean Diet and its importance for the cultural identity of the Mediterranean.

«This meant working on the development of digital platforms capable of enhancing the cultural experience, the history of the landscape and the sense of identity and continuity of knowledge of the Mediterranean Diet, more specifically in the Tavira region, focusing more specifically on the activity of olive oil, with a detailed presentation of the manufacturing process, as well as its didactic interpretation and dissemination on the protection and conservation of Mediterranean research».

The city of Tavira was chosen precisely because it was the city responsible for registering the Mediterranean Diet as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013.

Considering the object of study of the Portuguese partner, and within the scope of the iHERITAGE project, the University of Algarve established a partnership with the Centro de Ciência Viva de Tavira with the main objective of raising awareness of the Mediterranean Diet through the lens of augmented reality.

In this way, promoted by the Centro Ciência Viva de Tavira, the University of Algarve, as a partner, established a partnership with the DiMEd project, funded by CRESC ALGARVE 2020, which produced digital pedagogical resources related to the Mediterranean Diet, including teacher support materials /trainer and different resources for application in the context of a room/session and autonomous work.

In this sense, «DIMED's work aims to produce and develop innovative digital educational resources, based on the different dimensions of the Mediterranean Diet. Through support in a virtual environment, the aim is to improve and innovate the contents of the training offer for teaching and professional training. In doing so, the aim is to contribute to promoting school success, as well as adapting to the needs and sectoral transformations of the region».

More recently, «to highlight the importance of these partnerships, iHERITAGE Portugal created a brochure that compiles all the information regarding cultural and technical exchange while also providing examples of cultural elements of the Mediterranean Diet with QR Codes that can be read through the application created within the scope of the project, iHERITAGE MED DIET».

The iHERITAGE Mediterranean ICT Platform for UNESCO Cultural Heritage is a strategic project, 90% co-financed by the European Union's ENI CBC Mediterranean Sea Basin Programme. The total project budget is 3,8 million euros.

Anyone interested in the theme of the Mediterranean Diet and the iHERITAGE project will be able to participate and watch the presentation.
