PS eliminates IUC increase from the Budget for 2024

Due to the multi-annual nature of the measure and early elections being scheduled

The PS will move forward with the elimination of the measure to increase the Single Circulation Tax (IUC), inserted by the Government in the Budget for 2024, due to its multi-annual nature in a political framework in which early legislative elections are scheduled.

This was one of the reasons presented today by the leader of the socialist bench, Eurico Brilhante Dias, at a press conference on the PS Parliamentary Group's proposed changes to the State Budget for 2024, a document that has a final global vote scheduled for the 29th. .

Eurico Brilhante Dias said that, from the beginning, there was always an intention among the majority of deputies in his group to change the Government's initial proposal on the IUC, as it had caused many citizens a "perception of social injustice".

In front of journalists, the leader of the Socialist Parliamentary Group downplayed the impact on the budget balance resulting from the suppression of the IUC increase in the Budget for 2024, as well as the procedural issue regarding the fact that other benches presented proposals with a similar purpose to that of the Socialists. At this point, he claimed that the PS proposal is more complete, because it aims to eliminate the increase in the IUC and also its “update”.

On Tuesday, the last day of the deadline for submitting proposed amendments to the Budget, the PS submitted one to eliminate the increase in IUC for vehicles from 2007 and previous years, arguing that it is “a matter of social justice and protection of citizens with greater economic vulnerability”.

In the proposal, the socialists argue that «the light vehicle is in many cases still the main form of travel to work or to the nearest means of public transport, especially outside the country's main cities and in medium and low-income areas. density, where the supply of public transport is reduced and unsuitable for daily mobility needs».

«In these cases, where a car is an absolute necessity, there is also the fact that many citizens do not have the financial means to replace it with a more recent vehicle. Therefore, it is considered important, for reasons of social justice and protection of citizens with greater economic vulnerability, to rectify the OE proposal in this sense», he adds.
